Im not a big 2 stroke guy but ive worked on cars most my life. Some vehicles the engine rotates the opposite direction (counterclockwise vs clockwise or visa versa) is it possilbe that the engine you put in rotates internally the opposite direction of the orig. could that make the sled go in reverse? sorry im not nearly as familiar on 2 strokes as i am on vehicles

I would think that (mind you if 2 strokes are that way at all) could cause everything to rotate backwards causing the sled to go rev. instead of normal

NO. They all rotate the same way! (only exception I just learned here about is the Kitty Cat!) We have gone threw this just a little while back! First why did you pull the old motor? Did the new motor back fire and staert running backwards?

Thats good to know! Thank you! I know in vehicles that was a rare deal but did exsist.

No it does not mean that the wiring is backwards.
More likely the timing is so close to TDC that a backfire will actually reverse the engine.
The CDI controls the spark by way of the Trigger coil at the flywheel.
If that is in the wrong spot, what will happens is what did.

How did you start it? It should run in the direction the rope pulls in. Unless like RJ said, it backfired when you pull it and it kicked in the opposite direction.

Has anything been done to the timing, fly wheel or stator?

TDC = Top Dead Center.
If the timing is too far advanced any misfire will cause the engine to run backwards.
All it would take is to have a sheared timing key in the flywheel or maybe it got pushed out when the flywheel was installed.
Are you using the CDI for the 340 or one from a bigger engine?

It sounds like the engine timing is way way off. Most likely because the woodruff key on the flywheel sheared or rounded over.
