Please ID pix: indy 500 reverse gear assembly...
to make this concise - sled given to me from neighbor saying he busted the "reverse gear" which we later learned was the pinion gear in the chain case.
That was repaired. sled now running but not engaging the track.
With the track up, the secondary spinning caused the chain to spin but when the track was spinned, only the reverse gear (outer) was moving. with the chain removed, the inner gear spins on the coupler unrestricted both ways.
Pulled the reverse gear assembly - found the shaft and splines intact and spin correctly according to manually rotating the track.
The coupler is intact.
the retaining cup and spring are intact
both the reverse gear and the sprocket drive gear are intact. Between the two gears i found what is in picture 1...parts of a gear, a mangled spring, and the "bracket" was in the bottom of the chain case.
picture two shows the back of the reverse gear on the side where it mates up against the drive sprocket and the third pic is the case with the chain and reverse gear removed.
i understand how reverse gear works on this sled.
And i understand why the drive sprocket and chain move freely when the motor is running and can see why it is not turning the drive for the tracks as where it sits on the coupler is smooth with needle bearings.
1. so how does the power get from the chain and drive sprocket to the shaft driving the track? I am assuming there is some sort of coupler or 'gear' that mates the reverse gear and the sprocket that i am missing????
2. Looking at the parts diagram, i dont see a mention of this mangled spring or this 'bracket' shown in the picture. WHAT ARE these????
thanks in advance -

in case it needs to be known, it is a '93 indy 500 classic touring,.... and unfortunately, has reverse...
so i guess mostly i am wondering, how does the power being transferred from the motor, through the chain and onto the drive sprocket get transferred to the drive shaft given that the coupler sleeve which the sprocket is on is non-splined and just spins freely?

here is a picture of the inside surfaces of both the drive sprocket and reverse gear.
they sit flush together and spin freely on the coupler.
The parts diagram does not show any piece between them.
Should there be something to "couple" them together? And if so, on which one so i can reorder the correct one?
(sorry for the bad pix, my photobucket isnt working correctly)

Did you try the online microfiche? www.hlsm.com Not sure if it's different from other diagrams.

So it looks to me that the little black bracket is Attached to the pinion gear shaft where it meets the case..??..
Dont see anything that resembles the small spring.

That diagram helps. I have looked at all the parts numbers and descriptions and actually i dont see any for that CHAIN RETENTION BRACKET (?)but it looks like it there on the diagram.
I just cant seem to see how the forward gear engages the drive shaft...
Found some old posts about a 600 having A sprocket gear or pinion gear between them. Could this be the same? But not showing up on the parts diagram. Maybe this drive was swapped out?

There is something missing on the back of the reverse gear (the one the yoke pulls out) that should mesh with the sprocket. I wish I would have taken pictures when I had mine apart. Maybe Polaris dealer could email you a better diagram or even a picture.
I had a look online for pics and for the life of me, I can't find a pic with the guts in it. Hopefully someone has the parts in their garage and can tell us what is in there.

there is a star shaped spacer that goes between the bottom gears and keeps them engaged when spinning. the springs go behind this spacer to keep pressure and basically sandwich it between the gears. that is what you found pieces of... they are usually sold with the bottom gear and won't be cheap from the dealer. you can see what i mean in this photo
