76 panther engine knocking sounds

Hello
My 76 Arctic Cat Panther 5000 (spirit 500cc) makes loud knocking sounds from the engine when it is idle. However the knocking goes away when the engine revs up.
I'm not sure what is causing this, any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks

Clutch? Bearings? Piston slap?

Start with a compression test @wide open throtle. It is possible that there is carbon build up on the head?

Compression seems good, and there is very little carbon buildup. I don't believe the knocking sound is piston slap, or anything else.
I think my problem is with the carburetor now... it is set to the leanest it will go to get it to run somewhat and will still bog occasionally. Also my voltage regulator is toast, found that out by going fast in the dark and my lights fried Would lack of a voltage regulator cause any engine problems?

Usually you have a lighting coil and a ignition coil. These are usually separate circuits. I would start with the clutch, if you can pull it off and start it to see if it makes the same it will be eliminated. While your clutch is off clean it this always helps. Hope this helps

I ordered a carb kit and a new volatage regulator. I hope one of those fixes my problems. I also realized i am running 87 octane gas and I'm supposed to be using 90, plus I'm using the wrong spark plugs
