Weird starter problem 600 RMK
My '08 600 RMK has a really weird problem I wonder if anybody has ever encountered or heard of. When cold the recoil starter works perfect but when warmed up good the starter won't engage. If I pack snow around the starter it will start working again after 15 minutes or so. I pulled it apart and found nothing out of the ordinary. It's been doing this since early last season and is still doing it. Only 680 total miles on the sled.
Any ideas out there??
Thanks
Mike

Did you lube it up with a graphite compound?

The first time I tore it down, there was quite a bit of grease on the plastic friction disk that makes the dog extend. I cleaned it up but it still wouldn't extend the dog when hot.
The rope rewinds fine. Its just that the dog will not extend when hot!!
As I said it's weird!!
I'm thinking the plastic friction disk may be bad but it doesn't show any sign of wear or abnormality.

Polaris does use a lot of grease on that thing! Did you re-grease? If so, use some low temp stuff, maybe that will help...

Starter problem SOLVED!!
As in my previous post, the starter pawl would not extend when the machine was warm.
Pulled the starter off and pawl worked fine when cold. I heated it up on my wood stove and it would no longer extend. I ordered new friction plate and spring this morning. Should be here in a couple days.
The more I thought about it the more it bugged me. I'd disassembled it 2 or 3 times. This afternoon it dawned on me that the friction spring had to be low on tension so I pulled it out and with my fingers compressed it so it would grip the friction plate better. Put it back together, heated it on the 'ol wood stove again and WA_LAH!! It worked properly every pull.
Guess I'll have some spare parts to go with the sled someday!! LOL
Thanks to those of you who responded with suggestions.

Nice! Gotta love it when you fret over a problem and then finally get it fixed!
