Gutting air box and can worth it?

Hey so I recently rebuilt my sled and gave it a full port and polish/case matching and with the air box off you can really hear it sucking the air now. I was wondering if its possible that enough material was removed to cause it to do so or if i'm just imagining this. Also I was wondering if gutting my air box/drilling holes in it somewhere would actually improve my performance at all with the stock pipe? The spark arester on my sled is the old style indy can and I was wondering if I can remove some of the baffle to increase flow or if it would be counter productive? Sorry for so many questions just trying to get full potential out of my stocker.

Thanks in advance,
Don

There is no doubt you can here it sucking more air! Yes you can improve the stock can. Not sure about drilling holes in the air box. Perhaps find a way to duct out side air into the air box (cold air intake)?

Good thinking, I recall my friend had an rxl and the air box had a duct routed put by the key switch. I may try something like that seeing as I have the top piece for several air boxes. Are you for sure on the can ? Ive herd it could cause a loss in power although im not sure how seeing as its after the expansion chamber.

The can is simple. If you look into the outlet and inlet tubes you will see they are perferated! Simply drill a 1" hole from one side or the other, threw both! Then weld a patch over the hole!

In my experience opening up the can makes it sound like you got more power, verdicts out on whether it actually does anything. No doubt that work can be done to the air box. Could even go to a set of k&n filters or something like that

Anyone who didn't already know air from under the cab isn't going to be as dense as colder air from outside shouldn't be messing with their intake. What I was thinking if I were to get filters it would be taking everything out of the air box and putting the filters inside that as to still be sucking fresh air. I was just wondering if the shelf in there that holds the filter caused enough restriction to make a difference.

Also no perforation on the inlet side. The outlet side doesn't look like it would cause much restriction.

Shelf probably keeps stuff from falling in the carbs maybe. Also may keep the air less turbulent by the carbs making it easier to 'breathe'. Never had anything but stock air intakes, on my sleds. Just suggesting something I'd seen before (k&ns). After reading that I doubt there can be really appreciable gains from modding air box.

I may try the air duct thing. More fresh air could be a good thing. I'm just thinking cause the twin uses the same air box as my triple. Maybe an added hole somewhere or something. But I do like the "cold air intake" idea.

I used to have an air box off an indy that was narrower that fit my old 340 I believe it just didn't have the part that went over the steering column I don't remember it's long gone now. Turns out so are my other air boxes so I might hold off on modifying this one.
Thanks anyways.

What about the silencer? What would come out of removing that other than obvious more airflow. Would it cause problems?
