"whopping" sound at 4000 RPMs and above

HI all,
I'm getting back into sledding and bought a 96 XLT touring with the 600 triple motor. First 20 miles today were great, strong and smooth. After tipping it on it's left side (fighting a soft steep road side), and getting it back up, it started a "whopping" noise at the point when the clutch should engage. I limped it home at 15 mph, but need to know if I jacked the clutch, or what you recommend.
The drive belt is solid and nearly new, fresh oil, fuel, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Jdubbya

I would reccommend taking it to a dealership and they can tell you what is wrong with it.

First thing I would do is try and trace the problem to a particular component.

- Put the back up in the air, start it up, rev the motor until the clutch engages. If the sound is gone or noticeably lessened, I would look at things like the driveshaft (bearings), jackshaft (bearings), track tension, drive cogs, and even the chaincase.

- If the sound is still there as before, pull the belt and try again. If the sound is gone, at this point it would seem the issue is in the secondary.

- If the sound is still present, my guess would be that the issue is in the primary.

With each of these, have the hood open so you can observe the engagement. Don't overrev the motor as you don't want to cause something to come flying out and hit you.

DON'T run the sled without the belt! Swap out the belt and try it!

Sure sounds like a belt missing some teeth.

Assuming you don't rev the motor beyond the clutch engagement point, what's the harm? There's no difference until the primary begins to close and meets resistance with the belt.

whopping sound at 4000 rpms

HI all,
Thanks for the advice, you were right, the belt had a burned spot about 3" long that completely changes the angle of the sides of the belt there. The spare was a new 32 degree 11070 belt and it works great. I've ordered a new spare already. All your advice helped me examine the track and I found at least 14 missing studs and one that tore the track at the outer edge.
Pretty good chance I'm ordering a new/used 133.5 in the next few weeks!
