Parts for an Arctic Cat Cougar 550 Clutch

1996 Arctic Cat Cougar 550 Clutch was sticking, I checked the buttons and had .010" on each side, so pulled of the top and found one of the weights was wearing on the spider. Weights are shot, spider has grooves in it, and the rollers need replaced. I assume I will need a new spider, as well as the weights and rollers. Will I also need a new spring...and if I get a new spring for the primary, do I need a new spring for the secondary?

Where is the best place to get clutch parts with out breaking the bank?

Also I have a 1995 Arctic Cat EXT Mountain Cat EFI 580. Clutch seems to be ok, but you have to really wind it up to get it to kick in. Once it takes off, it will take the tube right out from under the kids. If I change out the spring in the clutch do I need to change the weights also? The Yellow spring in the 550 does what I need it to do, the 580 has a purple spring. Could I just throw a yellow spring in?

Thanks.

For the 550, I would invest in a new style 6 tower clutch as it would be cheaper in the long run.

For the 580, what is the engagement rpm?

I agree getting the spider out is possible, but the odds aren't in your favor! The threads have lock tight on them and they strip out most of the time! I picked up a real good low miles used 'New Style' 6 tower for $100! The wieghts and springs all interchange!

Hard to say...that is probably a new thread, as the tach jumps around. Im guessing a sending unit but have not done the research yet...feel free to throw out ideas.

The RPM's are high enough that when you initially jump on the sled at the begenning of the year, you hit the throttle, then back off.

It kicks in just past where I thought it should have kicked in.

I really have not jerked the kids off the tube yet, but it certainly does not make for a soft smooth start. The guy I got it from was into hopping up sleds, so Im guessing he tuned it so it would jump start out of powder at a high altitude (7000 ft +). I pull the kids around on the lake while ice fishing.

The Purple will likely engage at about 5k, depending on wieghts! Try the Yelow and see? The tac jumping around is likely a loose wire or ground?

The track jumping sounds like the track is loose and needs to be tightened.

I'll start looking for a 6 tower. If I had A-17 (46.5 gram) weights in my old clutch, what will I need in the 6 tower..

Thanks for all your help every one

Maybe just a set of 47's? But be sure it is a 'NEW Style' 6 tower! from a 30mm Cat! The older 6 tower is what you likely have! Then there was the 9 tower and all the Comet stuff!
Take a look at the Classifieds on HCS!

Tac not Track!

You can use the exact same weights and spring if you choose.
Unless you want a different run profile. [IE: higher engagement, more top out]

Thanks guys, I found a new 6 tower on E-bay from Cat Country for 199...I think it was the new style as required slightly larger weights. I decided to tune both sleds for 7000 feet elevation which is where I hang out the most anyway. I did not realize the lake I Ice Fish on was that high

thanks again
