small oil tank on 98 skidoo mxzx 440?

im just wonderin what it is and why it's there. the only thing I can think of is to send oil to lub the crank bearings or something. it's only about an 8 oz tank. I don't work on skidoo's much at all I'm fixing it for a buddy. I work on polarises alot and never seen one. he said that he puts oil in there and it drains in five minutes when it's running. any thoughts? thanks

I believe that's what they call oil injection.

It's the tank for the rotary valve to keep it lubed, and it should NOT be emptying out at all.

what would cause it to drain so quickly. the pump is bad possibly?

A bad seal on the rotary valve shaft would cause it to use up the oil too fast.

the line from the reservoir goes straight into the crank case right under where the jugs bolt on

I looked at www.hlsm.com and looked up your sled, and it says it has a rotary valve...

it's possible that someone swapped the jugs at some point to ones with reeds?

ok I figured it out it was made in oct of 98 which makes it a 99 model my buddy went by that and told me it was a 98. anyways it has an internal oil pump and it lubricates that shaft which also runs the water pump. so now I have a job for myself splitting the case and replacing those seals and bearings possibly

That sucks. Very common problem on that generation MXZX's.

ya I don't think you can buy those seals but still if you could I'd have to find someone to press apart the crank. I told him it would be easier to just throw in a new motor. plus the case is a pain in the rear end get apart and I don't have a clutch or a flywheel puller for a rotax to swap the crank out
