When a bearing is failing, what kind of noise should I expect? I noticed that for a short time when I would slow down to a stop I could hear a clinking noise. Couldn't tell where it was coming from but it seemed like it wasn't anything under the cowl.

The noise really varies. It can be a grinding noise, a ticking noise, or no noise at all. One I worked on for a friend had failed and was ridden for so long about an inch of the driveline was worn away. He lent the sled to another guy, and while he was riding, the driveline fell out. Oops. That sled didn't make any strange noises until it went KLUNK!
Hey guys, bumping an old thread. My speedo quit on my 95 Arctic Cat Bearcat 550. I checked the speedo and it is fine and the speedo cable. I was told the bearing was gone. I took a look and it doesn't look all that bad to me. here are some pics below. When I took the adapter drive off I noticed the key drive pin wasn't fully inserted in the drive shaft. After I pushed it in. It was hard to take out. After that it seemed loose and not catch as tight. Maybe all the grease was holding it in tighter.
Anyways, the speedo works, but I am wondering if I need a new bushing drive (insert) to hold the key drive pin tighter. Somehow it had slipped forward towards the adapter and that was why it wasn't working. How does the bearing look to you guys ?. I wiped the grease off so i can see.
looks good, did you spin your cable to the head to make sure that is ok? put it back together and grease it up should work. not sure if the adapter actualy has that much play in there not to catch both sides when together.

Yes, only thing I can think of is the pin isn't long enough, or the bushing in the drive shaft isn't holding the pin in tight because it slid out. The pin has to be pushed all the way into the bushing drive shaft otherwise the speedo isn't going to work. There is a lot of play for the key to slide forward from the drive shaft to the adapter plate.
