If you have a speedo cable, you could attach it to the adapter (that sits under the driven clutch), support the rear end of the snowmobile, start up and get the track moving, and see if you have rotation in the speedo cable. You could also remove the adapter, and see if the wire key inside the bearing rotates during track movement. At this point you can also visually inspect the bearing from the outside.

bearing housing

I put in new bearings in my 2000 zl580esr last spring, put 40 miles on it this year and speedo went out again, so i took it to my buddy he checked everything and found something weird, the bearing housing while it is in the sled is offset in the position. so when he adj track the leftside adj is out more than the right, which after running the sled ion stand, speedo adapter breaks. so that means the shaft isnt square. what could be the issue???? there is no signs of wear on the tunnel or where the bearing holder fits, the bolts are all tight and fit good.(nothing is ovaled or wore) could there be something wrong with the bearing holders? you can see the outer one is not center in the frame hole where it sits........

thanks for the help

cant

its at my buddy's and im going out or town today, hes gonna ask the local dealer, i did notice that the 99 and before years had different parts # for the covers and bearings, mine came as a kit. seems to me the bearing holders may be the wrong size.
ill try and give an example, say there is a 3" hole and the bearing holders are 2 7/8" so you have that difference, but the difference is all moved to the rear of the hole. so that makes the track shift back on that side which in return makes the driveshaft crooked. then with that it breaks the speedo adapter. im sorry for not having pics and his shop is aways away rom me.
