whats a stator?

What does a stator do? Is it similar to a distributive cap?

It's basically a coil that generates electricity when the flywheel magnets spin around it. The number of coils determine the voltage.

More like an alternator than a distributor cap.

Exactly like an alternator; it generates alternating current. It has to be rectified and regulated to make 12 volt DC for any 12 volt DC applications on a sled...

Stator, meaning stationary. It'd be pretty much backwards as to how a distributor works. In this case, the stator would be the rotor, and the flywheel magnets would be the cap. Except, in our case, the cap (flywheel) spins, and the rotor (stator) doesn't. Magnetic fields conduct electricity, I went through ignition systems last year... LONG class i tell you.

In order to convert ac to dc, gotta have diode rectification. How many diodes you need, depends on how many phases your AC source is. For 3 phase, you need 6 diodes to convert AC to DC voltage. For 6 phase, 12 diodes.

Pretty much to sum it up CHARGING SYSTEM

Not quite a charging system, than a trigger system for the ignition and coil for the lights.

In a nut shell... it's basically a mini generator. It works by passing magnets over a coil (or several coils) to generate alternating current.

A distributor is pretty much just a multi-position switch. Not the same as a stator at all.

Here are a couple of videos that show how to test a stator and how to remove and reinstall:
