if your on the trail and you want to know always have a set of spark plug wrenches, screwdriver, pylers and a dime. the dime is about the size that your spark plugs should be gapped

Jap plug, larger number colder plug. American which is what you should be using "support the economy buy domestic" Larger Number hotter the plug.

ngk= higher the number the colder the range
champion= the lower the number the colder the range

the insulator determines state of tune: good,pre-ignition,detonation
the flat where the ground is welded determines jetting:
wet= rich
dry = good
oily =rings or too rich oil mixture
grey=lean

also not that if the rings are bad or if you have a cylinder that is bad,the sled will run until it gets warm then shut down due too loss of compression.this is because of an abundance of oil in the rings which promotes compression until combustion burns it away then very little compression and sled won't start.
