Does anyone have a link to a video on how to change the oil in my chaincase? My sled has 589 miles on it and when I check the dipstick in the chaincase, it is kind of a grayish color with a few metal shavings in it. Figured it was time for a change.
Any help is appreciated.
There should be a drain on the bottom of the chaincase. Drain and refill with 11 oz of chaincase fluid. ATF can also be used in a pinch. (that's assuming you have mechanical reverse.. most Trail Tourings did...) Capacity for the regular chaincase is 8 oz.
No problem! Sometimes the drain can be difficult to see as the belly pan plastic can get in the way. And often some of the oil will drain into the belly pan. Have some rags or paper towels handy to corral the mess.
I'll start with 11 oz and check it;-) Thanks for the help guys. Looks like this weekend will be the first opportunity to ride. 12 inches of snow expected by this weekend Woohoo!
It's pretty common to have metal shavings in the chaincase, especially with the mechanical reverse, even at 600 miles. That's why there's usually a magnet on the drain plug or dip stick; to catch all the debris.
Using good oil always makes parts last longer, but even with synthetic, those shavings will re-appear. That's why it's nice to remove the cover to have a look inside to see if everything is ok. That is more difficult to do with the manual reverse option, though...
Well that answers that. I'll dip the dipstick in and out until the shavings are out. Thanks guys!
