Chain cover gasket question.

Hello, need a little help with the installation of a new chain cover gasket...
I recently purchased a used 2002 Tundra R. Unlike other chain covers this sled's cover is not made of heavy metal but instead of aluminum & it has no drain plug but apparently has a gasket. I need to remove this chain cover to drain the used oil & what I want to know is when I install the gasket do I need to use any type of gasket compound or not???
Thank you in advance...

If the gasket is still in good shape with no nicks and tears and makes good contact, you shouldn't need any gasket compound. That said, I put a bit of RTV sealant on the bottom 1/2 of my chaincase cover gaskets and after putting the cover back on, let it sit overnight before filling up the case. But the Polaris IQ chaincases have a rep for leaking, and they are plastic...

When I had sleds with no drain in the chaincase, I would tip the sled on it's side onto a rug or cardboard with the chaincase up. Then, with the chaincase cover removed, you can use a siphon or turkey baster (don't let the wife see you!!) you can suck out the fluid without making as much of a mess.

BC_Dan,
Just want to thank you for the info. I found out that gasket is discontinued but I found a Doo dealer in Penn. that had one in stock, but thanks to your idea I have a small hand pump so since the current gasket is not leaking & all I really want to do is change the oil I'll pump out what I can & fill er up with new. Gotta love this site cuz for guys like me who don't know how to do mechanics it's nice to bounce stuff off people who do...

The nice thing about removing the cover is you can use some cleaner and clean things up really well. There are a lot of nooks and crannies that will capture dirt and metal inside. You can also examine the chain and sprockets for problems if the cover is off. Changing the oil is a good idea, and your way works fine for that. New oil is always a good thing!

It's always the pits when the manufacturer discontinues maintenance items. Eventually you will have to remove that cover for something.. I would get that gasket coming, just to have on hand!

BC_Dan,
One last question on this....I have the new gasket coming, but when I remove the chain cover & IF I don't do damage to the existing gasket nor do I see any cuts or nicks in it would you consider maybe putting some RTV all around & using the same gasket? I only ask this since they have discontinued the gasket, I could save the one I ordered for down the road some day??
