Ice scratchers help cool the sled when in marginal trail conditions. They work by scratching the snow or ice, throwing up ice chips that can hit the heat exchangers. For deep lug mountain tracks, they are very necessary for cooling and for keeping the hyfax lubricated with melting snow. If you have a short lug track, they are not as important.

The ones above have the advantage of not breaking or bending if you back up. I have 'em on a couple of my sleds and so far, they work as advertised. Temps go down considerably, from 180 to 140 in about a mile of riding after you put the scratchers down.
