Anybody ever *remove* studs?
I bought a studded 440 Panther and a studded ZL550 last winter. The Panther track was SHOT, so I replaced it with an un-studded track. After riding it several times on the trails I normally ride, I really can't notice any difference with handling. I ride backyard trails, and some groomed trails in upstate NY. I took it across some big ice-covered spots on the trail, on the side of a hill, and didn't have a problem with traction. Thought the rear end might get loose, but it didn't!
Now I'm thinking of removing the studs from the 550. They make a mess of everything - like tearing up my trailer, driveway, and garage!!! I can't see any advantage to having the studs.
So here's what I got... The track looks as if it came moulded for studs. It has built-in square pads to hold the square backers from spinning. The outer rows were apparently never studded, even though the holes are there. If I remove the existing studs, would it weaken my track and/or reduce track life? Anybody have any experience or an opinion on taking the destructive little buggers out???
