Oil change

Well my truck turned over 100 000km's the other day and it's time for it's oil change. I usually go to the dealer because I negotiated a service contract that gets me free oil changes when I bought the truck. I'm curious about the quality of the stuff the dealer uses. I'm contimplating doing it myself from now on and switching to a high mileage synthetic oil with a good filter. All their crap says MOPAR on it and if I asked anyone there, they always say it's all top of the line

What brand of motor oil do you guys run in your vehicles. Any bad experiences with any specific oils or filters?

Use Mobil 1 5W30 in my '96 Chev Van...has over 165K miles & doesn't burn a drop. Usually swap every 10K miles, so that takes the bite out of the added cost.

Believe it or not I use Mobil 1 extra life. It says it's good for 15,000 miles between oil changes! It cost me $60 for one oil change but it will still save over changing regular oil every 3000 mi. I think I'll go 10,000 or so and change it. It also comes with a guarantee against failing, regardless of engine mileage. Hmmmm...

10-15 k between changes! Holy manifold!
I gave castrol syntec a shot. It cost me 70 bucks with a fram synthetic oil filter. We'll see how it compares to the crap the dealer uses.

Yeah SEG, I also you use Mobil 1 on all our vehicles, says you change it every 6,000 miles, but on my truck, with how its so massive, I change it every 4,000 miles, one because its better for it, and two it burns up faster than a usual motor does. Suppose I could just add to it, but i rather just flush her right out.

Hey, RX!! Not tryin' to be a nit-picker, but why not try typing without capping every first letter. Most evrry time, you have very good input to discussions, but your posts are very difficult to read.

Again, not tryin' to be a dck, just some constructive criticism. Just my $.02!

Slead is right. Most conventional oils do very well even up to 10k intervals under harsh conditions. Where things fail is usually the oil filters. That's how big rigs get away with going for ever on one oil change on a deisel. If you have a chance, take a look at their oil system.

I had a VW a while back and it stated to go on 9k changes "if" you used their oil filter with ANY SAE approved oil.

I've never looked into the Mobil 1 Extended life stuff, but I know the 'normal' Mobil 1 is good for about 15K miles IF you change the filter every 3-4K. Is their a stipulation with the extended stuff that you're supposed to change the filter every so often?

I use Mobil 1 with K&N filters in the 'stang. Also...stay away from Fram filters, they're garbage.

Oh also, unless you plan on keeping that truck a LONG time (as in, forever) I'd be taking the free oil changes from the dealer.

$70 for Syntec with a Fram filter is a serious rip-off, look around for some deals...IIRC PartSource had a 4.4L jug of syntec on for around $20 for a week or so.

I use castrol gtx in everything but the camaro. I figure I would rather just do regular changes then use a "better" oil and change it less. Also driving and hour and a half each way to work means I rack up the miles so fast, that spending $60 on an oil change gets expensive quick

I used a Mobil 1 filter with the oil, supposed to be the "complete package".

Fram filters are the cheapest made filters out there. Some engine manufactures will not warranty an engine with a Fram filter on it.

I know of an Amsoil dealer that uses amsoils dual bypass filtration system on his Cummins diesel, Hasnt changed his oil in over 50,000 miles!! Just sends in a sample to get analized every 10k or so and changes his filters, I forget what interval on the filters, maybe 20k? After he changes filters he just tops off what was lost in the filter change. Its an expensive setup though, over $300 I think, filters are like $20 or so.

I personally go about 8-10K per oil change on my truck. I have a Cummins, and use either Rotella or Delvac oil, and use Mopar filter for Cummins which is made by Hastings, a very good filter.
