Paintint A Sled - A documented process

Hello, I just got a 1984 yamaha phazer. Picked it up for $425 last week. Anywho, here it is the day i bought it:

I will be repainting this sled due to the ugly 80's color scheme it has. Here are my options for painting:

-Paint it either one color, or one pearl color. This would be nice and easy to do, and would look great.
-Paint it a marbelized color similar to the picture below (definatly not the color as the car below, but maybe a white and blue or somhing?)
-Paint flames, either the classic red white yellow orange, or else yamaha's white and blue would be really fun to do (i really like this option)
-Learn to airbrush and buy and airbrush kit and do a really cool mural and make this thing artwork (realisticly this wont be happening but would be really fun).

My buddies ride (marbelized paint):

Here is my sled totally naked:

Here is the hood being re-fiberglassed in some ares due to the cracks in the hood.

Other side, mud (bondo body filler) is being applied, to fill in the cracks that i demeled out and sanded.

Here is the headlight fairing with 2 coats of sandable primer applied. The first step in the process is to scuff the paint up with a grey scuff pad (or scotchbrite pad works OK), then clean the plastic with either a plastic cleaner or else a little bit of mineral spirits. NOTE: Do not shake an open bottle of mineral spirits up and down. Make sure the cap is secured tightly before doing so. Failure to do so will result in your eyes burning more than ever, a terrible headache that lasts 6 hours long, and will also force you to stop working on your snowmobile the rest of the day. Yeah, you guessed it, stupid me!! I was really lucky i flushed my eyes and used saline mist in my nose, on the bottle, death was one of the warning if injested. I AM VERY LUCKY TO BE TYPING THIS NOW!! Anyways, then after the cleaning, spray two to three even coats of primer, alowing 10 minutes of time inbetween coats.

Enjoy!! Hope this helps everyone out and gives out a general knowlege of how to paint a sled. I will update as I get more progress.
Thanks,
John

Looks good so far! I'm would paint it pearl white, then go to a sign shop and get some cool graphics made up. I tried airbrushing for a bit and man its hard! Only thing I would ever do myself is pin striping When you watch those shows you think man that looks like anyone could do it with some practice, but it takes serious skill.

Yeah, thats what i was thinking, but i really want to try it and do it for a hobby, looks like lots of fun. Pearl white is a great color. My favorite is the '06 Escalade pearl white.

11.21.05 removed rust from muffler, cleaned with mineral spirits, let it dry, painted with krylon bbq grill paint (1200 Degrees F). This is after 3 coats of paint. Im Happy!

Also, started to repaint the skis, here is one after 3 coats primer, and 2 coats base. I will go over it with 2 coats of clearcoat later on

I did the other ski, but got a bunch of body filler shavings in it right after I panted the basecoat, so im leting it dry, and then I will re-sand and re-spray.
Thanks,
John

it was 150 dollars, I had a 40% off coupon, so it wasnt too bad...

Thanks for all the praise. Im taking my time, doing things in sperts so I dont screw up anything. Painting is 95% prepwork, 5% actually spraying. Take your time, and it will DEFINATLY show!

11.24.05 Thanksgiving Day

Just a little update. I only have two more pannels to primer, but they are small, so this weekend they will be done. I got some new springs to secure the muffler system together, and it seems to be working great. Skis are sanded and re-painted due to myself rushing things. They will be clearcoated during the time I clear coat the rest of the body parts. Also, the HID headlamp conversion is pretty much complete, I just need to wire it up to the sled's wiring harness. Things are comming together fairly quick, and hopefully by the time we get some snow, the paint will be cured and waxed, and ready to go.

Pictures later, girlfriend is yelling now!!

11.24.05 Continued...

Here are the pictures:

The new Exhaust springs:

most of the body primered and in place. Already looks 100x better than it did!:

Now, my seat has a few tears in it, and it has been sewn a few times, but its a bad sore spot. Where can I get new materials to re-upholster the seat? Im not sure what it is, but I like what the newer sleds have, and I think its the same as the material used on dirtbike seats etc... I would love it to be a cool color too, like blue and white? Anyone have ideas/suggestions?

Talking JoAnn Fabrics

Hey, I redid my seat and I went to that big women's material store called Jo Anne's Fabrics. You need 2 yards I believe. Then completely unstich the original seat and make replicas with a black magic marker on the back side of the new material. Cut it out and dry out foam. Pretty easy. Then find a good sewer! lol http://www.over

do you have any pictures of your new seat? What kind of fabric is it called? Is it weatherproof? would it be smart to wrap the foam part of the seat with some plastic before I put the top fabric on??

Pictures I promised:
Before

After

I did this with a wool compounding pad used in detailing. I have a Milwakee buffer that I used (If you do this, use a wool pad that is old and crappy, you will most likely ruin it by polishing the traction holes on the bottom of the runners). This took 1/2 hour per side, and looks 100% better.

Me spraying a little basecoat on the hood (Cornwell HVLP gravity feed gun).

The right side is not painted yet. Everything still needs to be clearcoated. I am going to add either some blue flames, or else some snowflakes with my airbrush. I also removed the very ugly red and blue reflective tape off the sides of the sled, and added white reflective strips instead. I am either going to go over the white with a blue pinstripe, or better yet, some blue reflective tape. I am going to take more pictures as soon as I get the other side painted. BTW, the paint I am using is the Omni series from Red Rooster Auto Stores. Its their cheaper quality paint, however, the clearcoat is what will make it look really nice, and I have some really high quality clear coat.

thanks!
John

Everything is covered in white basecoat, and the hood is painted with blue flames as well!!!!! The color is AWESOME imo. I still have to hook up the airbrush and finnishe the flames this morning, but I will take some more pictures today. What sucks is I have to put these orange license stickers on the side of my artwork... I will most likely paint on the numbers on the sides though.
