Hood Cracks....How to fix them???
Is there any cheap way to fix hood cracks? Is there any particular kind of snowmobile hood that won't crack easily?

well, there's always snowmobile stitches as i call them. just take zipties and stitch the crack shut like that, or what i did for my 500 was bought this plastic bond/sealent for anything plastic and used it.
then, my dad got really creative and cut off some plastic from our pool filter flap to replace the plastic that the bracket hooks up to and used a plastic repair kit to mend it to the hood.
i have heard of people switching hoods from different years or aftermarket companies, but dont know which company. and i think the lexan ones dont crack as easy, but they are big bucks. anyone know about different hoods and how well they resist cracking?

That's what I did in the past. If you get enough of them, it tends to look kind of radical. Or like Gerry Cheevers goalie mask.

Oh god...Yes they look okay for a repair but one of my friends has a three wheeler someone went overboard and started drilling holes and putting the "snowmobile stiches" on where there were no cracks at all.lol

1st Q-I don't know
2nd Q-2 inch thick steel hoods never crack, even when you pound on em with a hammer, makes the sled go kinda slow though

sickcivic is on the right track..........get a fiberglass repair kit that includes resin with hardener, & fiberglass mat/cloth. Work from the underside of the hood. Rough up the area around the crack with 60 grit sandpaper; apply some resin with a cheap paintbrush, lay in some mat/cloth (make sure you apply more resin so the mat/cloth is saturated). Repeat so you have about 3-4 layers for added strength.
Should be plenty strong & you won't even need to mess up the paint/decals on the top side.

There's also some stuff called "tigers hair" I don't know who makes it. It's supposed to be better than fibreglass. I'm sure any auto parts store will carry it.

all tiger hair is is bondo with fiberglas strands mixed in all that is used for is base coat on patches and rust holes. like mentioned above use cloth and resin on backside and if needed use light weight filler on good side if you have to repaint hood make sure that you do a good job sanding the hood with 220 grit(for primer)
and 320-400 grit for finalcoat i have not had any problems painting hoods no matter what they are made of as long as the sanding and prep work is done properly hope this helps. good luck!!

I agree with civic. Our old 1978 Yamaha 250 has seen a few trees in it's past. Did a big fiberglass repair and paint this summer and it worked great. Cheap and effective.

Yes there is, you can mechanically weld this type of plastic. Pre 98 machines use a fiberglass kit. No more stitches or glue. Alot of parts can be repaired so its undetectable without having to repaint. See http://www.jlautoworks.com
