removing decal adhesive

Previous owner of my dads sled removed all the decals from the hood, leaving a residual of adhesive which just looks terrible. Whats the best chemical to remove the residual adhesive without damaging the finish of the hood?

Mineral spirits, paint thinner (NOT lacquer thinner!), even gasoline is not too harsh on the paint.

careful with thinner though...although it may be not harsh on the paint...it loves to feed on plastic.

It's pretty much the same thing as Goo-Gone. The lemon oil cuts the adhesive, and the polish leaves a nice shine. It really works quite nicely.

3M makes an adesive remover, i can't remember the pt # on the can right now but I use it yearly when I remove the previous years trail permit. It doesn't hurt the finish at all. Avail at most any auto parts house.

When I de-badged my car, I heated it slightly with a hair dryer first. It helps loosen up the adhesive. If there's enough where you can actually pull at it a bit, pull slowly and you can remove most of it manually. Then I'd take a soft cloth or even a cotton ball (depending on how much you have to remove) and use GooGone - doesn't hurt the paint/clear coat at all, and you just wash the residue (from the GooGone - it'll leave a little behind) as normal.

Gotta be careful with that stuff... it EATS some finishes. Painters use it to remove dried paint from their tools and stuff. Very powerful stuff.

cool, thanks for the responses everybody. So many choices I think I'll just mix them all together and see what happens....

Oh, and the ceramic coated pipe, what should I use on that?

You put decals on a ceramic coated pipe?? What a dum-bass!! J/K
Really, tho....did you do that??
Anyway, if some hypothetical dum-bass were to put stickers on his pipe, how would he get the burnt, crisp adhesive off?? Could you use a propane torch & turn it to ashes, then buff it with Mother's polish? Just 1 idea....

I say get some refined Uranium from North Korea, and try that on your pipe. That should take care of the worst baked on goo!
