95' ZR580 carb performance... is it possible?
I just bought a ZR 580 for $300 (it has a little fire damage). I need to go fast but I know its not made for it. But what might be the best things I can do? I have searched but not found much. Is there any way you can put reeds on one of those? What about "head milling???" My neighbor has a machine shop. I'm not sure how much money I will have left after the new cosmetic parts but I want to go fast?

Clutching is a good start.

Head milling = Higher compresion = Higher octane gas = Even more $$$$$ on gas!!

It's a ZR 580!!! HOW fast do you need to go?
That sled, completely stock, will certainly go fast enough to kill you.

As FAST as possible, thats what I like!
I am not scared of much and if it doesn't scare me than its not fast enough. I have a moded fast 5.0 mustang, a yfz450 thats tricked out and hauls ass. My 97' 5.0 explorer isn't even close to stock and that moves for weighing 4400 lbs.
But I had another ??? Is there ANY way that it is possible to put reed valves on it?? Thanks

You need a different crank case for reeds.....Cheaper to drop a 900 in it.....

You hit just the right mogul at 30, and you're toast! Not many places around where I live that you can even open it up. Mostly trails running through farmer's fields, with drainage ditches and ponds everywhere. Maybe he's talking about lake racing...
Anyway, I was at an accident scene last year, shortly after they took the kids out by helicopter. Police said speed was a factor. 17 year-old died in that one. No drinking, no drugs, just going too fast and to see over a small hill, and hit head-on. One was a 440, and the other was a ZR580.
Fast is fun... but do us all (and the sport) a favor, and stay alive!

i'm not dead yet
I will definately stay alive the best I can, but speed is what I was born for so I handle it the best I can. But it is sad how many deaths and injurings there are, that are just caused by stupidity.
Where might be the best place to find out about motor swaps. And maybe the best place to get one. Anyone know what might be the easiest model/motors to swap in there?

The 580 is not a reed engine. To gain some HP, you can add twin pipes (black magic makes some good ones), maybe get the cylinders ported to flow more air, put a clutch kit in it, make sure things are aligned properly (clutch, track, skis). You can add studs to gain traction if you are on ice a lot... A stock ZR 580 will do over 100 in the right snow and elevation and is VERY fast in the twisties. Just be careful, as you add HP, there is a tendency to lose reliability, and if you porting and pipes, jetting is critical... much more tweaking of the carbs is necessary as you change elevation and temperatures.
that said, drive with reason and respect and live a LONG life

I would say put a pair of pipes in it, and clutch it. Then i would go in the carbs to see what u have for jets in it, mill the heads off and what not
ive got a stock 580 and it goes well over 100 then ive got my mod 580 that will go bought 130 with alot of money into it

Easiest way to find out is to borrow a GPS, and clip it to your dash... then open her up. When you stop, you can go through the stats. You sould have average, min and max speed listings available.
My ZL550 speedo reads around 10 MPH faster than my GPS says I'm going.

The best ive seen on my ZR580 was just at the 100 mark. It takes no time to get to 90-95 but the extra 5-10 mph takes a little time. BTW that is on a 1996 ZR580 EFI completely stock.
