coil specs?

i was wondering if by any chance someone might have a manual or book that would tell you the internal ignition coil specs on an 89' cougar 500 f/c. i just picked up this sled and it has no spark. i traced it down to either the internal coils or the cdi.

its just that i tried to take off the cover to get to the coils and they are stripped, so if someone had the specs i could test them before i remove them. any help is greatly appreciated.

It's probably the CDI. What are the odds that BOTH coils went bad?? Did you try disconnecting the key/kill/tether switches first to make sure it's not one of them?

yes i dicoed the kill switch. thank you though b/c my jag uses the same cdi, i'll have to go swap them an see.

but i have a question, does the external ignition coil need to be grounded on both sides, or can you ground only one side?
b/c right now it was just screwed to the air box and i'm trying to find a place to put it where it will still have a ground.

ok i swaped cdi's off my jag and the cdi on my sled still gives spark on the jag, so it must be the external coil. now what is the difference between most coils? like can i use one from another sled, even if they arn't the same part number? and if i can would this hurt any thing?

I had to replace the external coil on my '92 ext 550, there was no ground to it, just two leads from the cdi.

I bought mine for 20 bucks made as an aftermarket replacement by kimpex, after replacing that it really woke the sled up

if your coil is the same as a 92 550 which it should be close...

Priamry resistance- between the 2 small wires coming off of the coil is 0.30ohm +/- 15%

Secondary- between the two spark plug wires is 6300ohms +/- 20%

sorry for asking so many questions, but is the 6300 ohms for the secondary the readings for the coil when your pulling it over, or are those stand still readings?

stand still readings, you could have the coil completly off the sled if you wanted to

ok i yet have another question then, do i test the secondary between plug caps, or between the 2 wires that go to the cdi, b/bc i can't seem to get a reading any where.(even on my other sled which has a good coil)????

secondary is between the plug caps, make sure you are touching the metal way up inside the boots

well i have 6700 ohms in the secondary, but only like 18 in the primary, but my jag runs the same primaries and that one only has 18 ohms and that one still has spark. also i noticed that the primaries arn't usually bonded together.. the ones on my cougar are, would this matter?

18 ohms sounds too high for primary resistance according to the book which says only .30 ohm

and it shouldn't matter if they are bonded together or not, as long as no bare wires are touching eachother
