Have you been adjusting the timeing or had the flywheel off before this started happening?

No idea what compression should be on that, but that sounds low... Compression that low automatically means its going to be a pain to get started, fuel is harder to ignite without the compression behind it.

Compression should be 120 or better, under 100 means that if you get it started, it will run very poorly.

Did you test with throtle wide open? If so then the compression IS your problem!

fix one issue at a time, and often the other issues go away! The timing is going to have to be reset, no question there. The backfiring could be from the timing, but it could also be from the compression. (low enough compression the fuel charge doesn't always ignite in the cylinder, sometimes it will misfire and send raw fuel out the exhaust, where it will ignite.)

Either get a second tester to confirm, or pull it down!
