Question 78 El Tigre 6000 Jetting issues

Greetings everyone.

As most of you know, I've got a 1978 El Tigre 6000 (Spirit 440 L/C)

well, getting to the point.

I need some specific Jetting info on this sled

I had to discard the carbs that were on it, they were 38MM causing the machine to run like crap.

I found a pair of 34MM from an Indy Trail 488.

They are still jetted for the Polaris.

I need to know what size Jets to install, A/C installed 270 Mains from the factory. they called them "Break in" jets. so what's an appropriate size to install?

also, what are correct sizes for "All" the jets? and what should the initial setting for the air mix screw?

Thanks to everyone.

Isn't there a Jet chart on the belt gaurd? You need to pull the 38's down and see what all is in it? You can go to like Country Cat (a sponsor here) and look it all up on there micro! But why did te 38's make it run like crap?

Since you are going from the 38mm to 34mm, the jetting may be near spot on.
Try it and check piston wash and plug color to be sure.

Kccats,

There probably was a chart at one time ( when it was new.) But since then, it looks like its been painted, and all decals have been removed.

I think the 38mm are off a different machine. The previous owner probably tried to build a "sleeper" sled. But engine is still stock. Maybe with a stinger exhaust set up it might work better.

I will check that, however im thinking the main is too small as its stamped 130 on side. Let me know what you think.

I would start with the jets that you have been running.

Thumbs up

KCCATS,

to dig a little deeper into what was going on. The 38mm carbs, while the engine DID idle good, mid to WOT was severely lacking. Mid range was boggy and sluggish. WOT, or maybe I should say, the lack there of. I could hit that high end plane, but then she would just fall flat on its face. The cylinders were loading up, then she would backfire, usually into the exhaust can.

I just bought a new throttle cable for it too, I still have to do some adjustments to that as well.

but just trying to get a base line starting point, I can get my hands on a carb syncronizer so that's not an issue.

hope that helps shed some more light on the issue at hand.

Thank you guys for everything.

Greetings KCCATS,

you know, I thought of that at first, but when I switched carbs, (before my OLD Throttle Cable snapped at the block) I took her down my road to the corner and I was doing about 75mph in the 1/8 mile it was down to the corner. She NEVER went so fast, or felt so strong. but I was worried that I was running too lean, so I parked it till I could find the right Jetting sets.

I DID find some good info today.

I found out that the STANDARD main jet is supposed to be 260
clip position is 2 or 3
Pilot is anywhere from 1 to 1.5 turns out from seated.
pilot Jet is supposed to be either 30 or 35

so that's a very good start.

Tomorrow its time to pull carbs and see whats in there.

Thanks again guys.

OK on top of that there are different Needles as well as needle jet (in the center and the main jet screws into it) The jet needle could be a Q-4 or P-6 or what ever! Then there is the slide cut away as well!

Morning KCCATS,

Yep I found that later last night after some hunting.

Needle is P-6 166
Cut away is 2.5

And I THINK the needle/seat assembly is either 1.5 or 2.0

Thanks for the info

fuel ratio

interesting to find out the ratio of oil too gas is 20-1 for the 78 , 79 440 liquid with regular gas and 40-1 for the 80 -81 el tigre 6000 500cc liquid with regular gas. but the 500cc free air is 40-1 on premium gas in my cat book...........i have 250 mains in a 79 6000 at 2500 feet in 20 degrees with good plug color will have to change it up when its colder and more snow

Re: 78 El Tigre 6000 Jetting issues

Greetings everyone,

I got to talking with a friend of mine, back in the 70's and 80's the oil was crap. I'm thinking of running AMSOIL at a ratio of like 32:1 instead of the 20:1 the book calls for.

He said that the reason for the heavy ratio was they were afraid of burning down the engine due to bearing failure.that's why they were over oiling the bearings.

Re: 78 El Tigre 6000 Jetting issues

The new oils are full synthetic or a blend. Even the old ones can be safely run @ 40:1 and even 50:1.

Re: 78 El Tigre 6000 Jetting issues

That's good to know. Thanks much RJ

How about on a rebuild? Would i still need to make a heavier mix? Like on an older cat motor that requires a 40 base but would be mixed at like 20 to break in. Does this still hold true?

Mix 40:1 all the time, just do not use full synthetic as it is too slippery and takes forever for the rings to seat in.
