when to do rings?

when is a good time to do rings? sleds got 3300mi. should i do a compression test or just go ahead and replace them for the hell of it. i am in an engines class in collage and would probably do it there due to the fact that all of the tools would be available. what am i going to need besides the rings and the head gasket?

if you are going to do it you should really put a set of pistons in also. looked for cracked piston skirts, may be to hard to see until after it breaks and ruins a cylinder. check needle bearings and the piston pin also. if your in an engine class what a better way to learn than doing your own stuff.
