Blew it up

Well I blew up the SnoPro yesterday....I was riding it tuesday, seemed fine, was drinking lots of oil, and was shooting out burned oil, but the plugs were a great color so I figured no big deal... Well yesterday we were runnin it on the trails, had about 115 miles on, we were on a straight and I had it at about 3/4 throttle, all of a sudden it bogged out, then lost all power and popped... Looked at my oil resovoir, didnt really use any oil in 115 miles... So we towed it back... I was pretty pissed off and just wanted to leave it there and hope it got stolen, but my uncle talked some sense in me and we towed it back... Me and my one uncle came home today, my other uncle is still upnorth, and is gonna tear her down and see what happened.. Im done with the sled at this point and dont care to fix it.... It handles the bumps nice, but its just slow.. Up to 50 its pretty quick, after that its got nothing.. If I did keep it I would have to do so much to it.. It needs 1 new carb, at least 1 piston and rings, crank seals, we'd have to figure out why its blowing oil outta the motor, and I just lost interest in the sled... It looks sweet and is a rocket up to 50, but thats all its got goin for it.. So I dont kno what to do at this point.. Im at a loss, and this season is shot... I figure I could sell it as is with blown motor for 1200.. But I wouldnt be able to buy anything decent for that price, so idk... And I dont have much interest in rebuilding it....

Sorry, man. My ZR ran all last year with nothing but a small clutch problem that was easily fixed with parts I had laying around. This year I've spent around $700 on it already.

These darn Cats lol... This is just a junk season for all our sleds pretty much. My uncles speedo stopped working, my other uncles chaincase is leaking, and its getting hard to start, used to always start first pull...

Now im debating what to do.. Spend 5-600 bucks to get it fixed properly, or just put on a new piston to make it run and sell it... I dont see myself keeping this sled even if I get it running good, so I think ill just pop on a new piston, sell it, and start over!

That's what I've been trying to tell you.....

Buy a Polaris or a Skidoo.... Maybe even a Yamaha :D

lol, Kicking a man when he's down. Just kidding, don't get mad.

I had a similar realization with our 380 this week. The trails were perfect and the rev showed me that a 380 is weak sh!t. It grips the trails perfectly and shoots you in and out of the corners. It is plenty quick up to 50, then same issue.... it aint got much after that. I find myself with it pinned to the bars on practically every stretch from one corner to the next.... and it's getting a little boring. Thank god I have the 600 to wind up in the fields to relieve myself from time to time. I know, you guys told me this would happen, and I will admit that they were right.

Back to the main topic, I'm very sorry for your loss.... I would feel pretty jypped if my motor blew up and I wasn't even beating it all that hard.

Lol, its all good! I thought id be alot more upset then I am, but stuff happens. And I wasnt all that in love with it anyway... I'll be honest with ya, if I didnt have all Cat gear, id prly get an edge xc sp 600..

Right now my thinking is, get a new piston on, sell it for hopefully arround 2200-2400, I kno that sounds like alot, but ive seen my sled go for that....Then this summer, find a smoking deal on a low mileage sled, that ill keep for at LEAST 3 seasons.. If I could find a nice f7 for 2800 thatd be sick!! Even an f6!

It does suck that it blew, but at least it happened at the end of the ride... And yea, I honestly wasnt beating on it hard at all, I dont beat my sleds, I ride em hard, but dont beat on it... Hopefully I can get a piston and gasket kit for like 150 bucks, get it running, then sell it... I mean, some good does come out of this, im "stuck" on the insanely responsive zl 600! haha

and oh yea, to let off some of the anger, I left the prev. owner a nice little voicemail:thumbsup:

hahahahahaha

just mod it and throw a 600 in it

you no what, I was actually thinkin about that, but itd be a ton of work, adding heat exchangers and all... i did find a zr600 motor for 600 bucks... I'll pay ya if u wanna do the project for me! haha

As for the zl, nope not that bad at all! I miss that sled right now lol

As for problems with Cats, my son has an XC SP and a Phazer. We've had to rebuild the clutch on the Poo, new HiFax, and few other things. Right now the Poo's headlight switch is fried, needs Runners, needs new springs on the rear and shocks rebuilt.

Don't know what's wrong with the Phazer yet, it's not currently running and haven't had garage space to get it in yet. The motor has less than 500 miles on it.

That sucks dude!!!! I feel for ya! Any plan of attack yet?

#12 ·
get full coverage, sink it in a lake, report it stolen! haha

#13 ·
its not too bad to put a 600 in it get the parts and we could have it done in a weekend..

#14 ·
Even having to add heat exchangers and everything?

If you dont smile every time you look at it then it sounds like its time to find something new.. Fix it and sell it.. Then keep an eye out for deals.. there out there.. I picked up an 09 X-fire 600 for 3700 out the door..

Dont even get me started on the previous owner.. That little f*cker screwed me over BIG TIME... Never mentioned anything about how the motor was torn down before, or the bad crank seals, or that he added the speedo and that it has WAY more then 2700 miles.. Never mentioned it blows oil outta the oil either, but im sure thats my fault right?

#20 ·
i'm not saying its your fault.... i think when you sell something you should be 100% honest with the buyer, even if they don't ask the questions. my point is your PO at the previous owner (and by what you said, I would be too) but you mentioned
Right now my thinking is, get a new piston on, sell it for hopefully arround 2200-2400
. can't complain about it when you want to do the same.... like i said, figure out exactly what it needs and go from there.

I think i was the first one to hear about this. I was out trail riding and we were taking a break and i get a text from mike saying my sled blew. I was like whaaatt!! Ha. Ditch it and get yourself a poo. Gear sells fast on craigist.

#22 ·
Runner, I kno what your saying. Just cuz I got burned, doesnt mean its right for me to burn someone else...

Yammi, yea u were the first one I texted lol, I txted u within 5 minutes after it blew, haha I was so pissed, i was like hmmm who should I tell lol

Just talked to a guy interested in my sled.. i was completely honest with him. he said he was very knowledgeable about sleds and has been around them all his life.. He doesnt want me to tear the motor apart, he said keep it how it sits, and he'll give me 1300-1350.. what do ya think? Take it, then throw in a few more hundred and get me a zr 600?

#24 ·
Update, got another person interested. He said as long as its as clean as I say, he'll give me the price I was asking, $1600. Thats pretty sweeeet, cuz I payed 1600 for it running, and im gunna break even, even tho its blown up! Hes gunna call me tuesday

#26 ·
and just found this sled... I was hoping for a 2000 or newer, but this sled has really low miles.. If that guy really gives me the full 1600, ill have an extra few hundred bucks to do some upgrades to the zr!!
98 Arctic Cat ZR 500 low miles and cheap!!

#27 ·
why don't you just go ahead and start off with a 600?!... I don't like the sound of that guy. For one, he let his sled get dirty, and if the hood and windshield were/are all f'ed up- then he must've ran her pretty hard. A good price though.

And I agree with Yami's previous statement. Gear goes fast on c-list. Pick up a Polaris.

#28 ·
Oh sh!t... i thought that was a 600 lmao my bad
