98 special ?'s

I recently bought a 98 powder special. The mods are as follows: single psi pipe, uni filters, delta v-force reeds, bored carbs, and the clutch has been improved as well. I've had the sled out so far twice, for short rides. It seems to do well. My question is , what is your opinion on some of these mods, like bored carbs? I've been told by some people when you start screwing around with mods like that your asking for problems, is this true? I know alot of guys are piped and have the filter set up. My main objective with this sled is to have a reliable consistent machine. If that means sacrifice a little power, then I'm willing to do that.. Any input would be appreciated...........

UNI filter is CRAP!
When snow melts on your pipe the steam will go in the carbs and can frees and make werry bad thing to carbs, piston and cyl. The carbs must take the air from top of the hood and just mod the stock filter. What clunch setup have you?

If you want reliability, totally stock is the safest, but I don't think a new pipe or reeds will hurt anything as long as you monitor your jetting closely to make sure the new pipe doesn't lean it out too much. Same with clutching, that's a pretty safe way to get some performance without sacrificing reliability as long as it's not over-revving. I don't know much about the bored carbs though, I'd be a little careful with that unless I really knew what I was doing. Good lucK!

Well all these mods have actually been done already...The carbs are the ones I'm concerned about...

As long as the carbs are jetted correctly you should not have any problems with the larger carb bores. however larger carbs flow more air and more air requires more fuel so they are not as cost efficiant.

I think the jetting is pretty close to being right on. My concern is, I'm not sure with the mods I have if I'm even able to utilize bored carbs. I think I might try and put the stock ones on to see if there is much difference.

boring carbs is really only benifial when the motor has a port and polish or a race set up with high compresion. you do have a pipe so that is a start. as for the uni filter I personly have heard nothing bad about them but if you just have to be sure of them buy some kick @$$ air filters from black magic.

Those filters make that much difference?? Any good websites for buying a pair?

uni filters work very well though, have you ever cleaned them or oiled them, what color are they? put some d&d bulleyes on and they will vent out the air intake.uni will not filter out anymore than paper filters will. If you are woried about sno under the hood tape the vents shut
