2001 Arctic Cat 600 touring triple starter issue

Hey, all. Need some help. My starter was screwed and upon ripping it apart I found that the starter shaft had snapped.

I have a new one now which has the starter gear attached. The problem is that it won't fit past the flywheel to go back in.

The guy at the shop told me that I needed to take the gear off the starter shaft.

Is this the way to do it??? If so... how do I do that? Or do I have to take the flywheel off removing the clutch, etc??

Thanks in advance.

If it is a two piece starter ( motor and bendix) then yes pull the clutch! Put the nose piece on then the clutch!
