Noisy Primary Clutch

Ok, so I have read about 100 threads discussing clutch problems, I am still not certain if what is happening in my clutch is repairable or not. Still working on my 1st snowmobile, 98 Panther 550, I am getting a metallic pinging sound from my primary at idle, not noticeable when the rpms rise enough to engage the belt. From what I can fathom reading through the clutch threads, this is related to wear in the clutch bushings and loose weights banging around in the clutch. I also understand that it is next to impossible to tear one of these things apart, mine being a nine bolt version. So my question is, will I be able to get to the bushings and replace them or will this be a major PITA requiring tools that only dealer has and will likely cost a fortune to get them changed by the dealer? Do these things come apart at speed like a grenade when they need an overhaul like it appears mine does? Thanks in advance.

It could be as simple as the spider nut coming loose and making noise, to as bad as needing a complete rebuild. How many miles are on the sled? It may be less money to find a used primary compared to buying the tools to do the job yourself. Or you can send the primary off to have it rebuilt and balanced, there are a lot of reputable places that do good work.

It is definitely something to be concerned about, they do come apart, and they can really do some damage to the sled and you...

If you can get the primary on the bench, remove the cover and spring and then you should be able to diagnose where the metal to metal contact is coming from. Then you will know more about which way to proceed.

Thanks guys, I have the clutch removal tool on order, should be able to tear it apart by the weekend, will let you know what I find. 5000 miles on the sled by the way, from what I have seen from the rest of the sled, the clutch has likely never been apart.

Well I finally got my clutch puller and have the clutch apart on the kitchen counter. There is some play in the bushing that moves the outer sheave in and out but the real problem is the weight bushings are gone and some of the weights are worn oval where the bushings were. The stock weights are 50.5 grams, this is a 1998 panther 550, should I go with the same weight? Can anyone recommend a kit for this or do I need to order all the bits and pieces separately? Thanks, John.
