Stud a 2010 Z1 Turbo LXR?
 Hi Everyone,
Would like your opinion on studding a 2010 Z1 Turbo LXR? Arctic cat changed the single ply cobra track to the two ply 1.25" lug ripsaw this year. I never had a studded sled, therefore I would like to know a few things from you real world user's. I've heard that turning and stopping is greatly improved overall. My ski setup is Bergstrom 8" triple carbides with ski savers & shims. My track is 128". I do ride aggressive at least half the time. Below is a list of things on my mind;
1) Do you have a studded track? If so, are you gald you studded it and why?
2) Do you like the overall handling characteristics?
3) Is the overall ride not as smooth with studs?
4) What do you recommend for studs? Stud Boy, Woodys, etc.
5) I'm sure carbide studs last longer, but by how much on average?
I know it's a lot of questions, but I would rather get your opinions over a salesman trying to sell me their product. It's an investment, and I trust what you have to say. After all, who better than to ask? Your time and help in letting me know is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ray

I put 144 studs on my zr800 last year. I can't remember the name or size, but they were an off brand carbide tipped stud with poly-nylon backer.
I cant comment on real aggressive performance, because I put them on when I did a fresh top end rebuild. But I put 300+ miles on just putsing the trails at 30-50 mph.
The main reason I wanted studs was for safety. 100+mph takes a little extra time to stop on snow and ice.
I did match the studs with a set of dual carbide runners( I think they were 6"). I could tell a big difference with these. Good sharp turning.

Stud that Bad Boy!!!! With that kinda power it would break loose and get sideways every time you give it any gas!!
I stud everything! stopping is greatly improved! I can do 100mph in 500', without studs it would take 2000' to stop!
Can' say the ride is any different!
The reason they droped the single ply is the ballooning affect! It was hitting the cooler!
I would go with Stainless Steel carbide tipped, and double tap atleast 144!

Thanks for the great info.! I noticed that the stainless steel carbides are less expensive than the steel one's.. With that being said, I was under the impression that they were not as good. Have you ran both? Thanks again for your help, Ray

One more question; Is there an advantage to just studding up the middle instead of all the way to the outside? Thanks again, Ray

Studding along the outside can destroy a track much quicker.

Thanks for the help. I've also heard if you don't go to the outside, you still have a little slide in the corners. The little bit of slide along with better traction overall would be great. Thanks again, Ray

Studding the outside rib will cause the sled to push in the corners! Adding even more carbide up frount will help but then the studs can pull threw!
Stay in the middle and use the double tap backers and do 4 across center in a V patern!

Thanks for your help. From what I've been reading as well as your advice, I will only stud up the middle. I know Arctic Cat has sled specific templates, but don't know if there templates are for center only. Would you suggest using a template? Thanks again, Ray

By all means, use a template, makes getting the spacing much easier.

There are a few different templetes! I use a very bassic! It's like 9" wide with spacing holes! A bassic V is the important part!
