Just go full rotation after it has sat with the penetrating oil, this will clear any rust off the cyl walls and free up the rings too.

Won't matter. You can also pull it over slowly with the rope too.

Battery is not required to make it run or even to have the lights work when the engine is running.
You do need it for the E-start though.

If I remember correctly, the plug wire is molded into the coil, not very easy to replace.
Much easier to just change out the coil.

It could be that it was removed. If the electric start stops working, people usually replace it with a pull cord rather than spend money to buy a new one.

Most sleds have a rewind with electric start. and if they woulda removed the electric start they woulda removed the battery too. but I'm thinking new battery ur electric start should work. Electric start starts teh motor via pull start the pull start has springs that bring the fingers in when it rewinds so they dont get dmaged when starting. electric start is the same way so u can have both starter on backside of motor pull start on side.

Not necessarily. They may have left the battery in because the starter went and they used a pull cord as a temporary replacement, right? I don't really know, I'm just trying to help figure it out because it would make sense.

Came with both.
Recoil starter for anytime the battery was not enough to crank it over.
And yes, it does work like a car in the respect that the key switch is also the starteer switch.
The starter motor is under the exhaust manifold on the front of the engine and engages a ring gear on the flywheel to spin it over.
My guess is that it is all there as the battery is still in place.

Replacing the coil is fairly straight forward. You can do it with the engine still in the sled.
It is easier if you remove the carb first and the take the plastic coil cover off. There are two separate coils under there, one for each cylinder, and each with it's own wires to the magneto.

I know on a few coils I have seen, you can unscrew the wires... Jump the battery with a riding mower, etc... and you will know if it works or not.
