sticky secondary

if i take the belt off the motor revs out great. if i put it on and try and run it across the lawn it will bog around 5k rpm and occasionally snap out of it and rev out. if i lift the tail end up and take the load off it will rev out fine. i think the secondary is sticking because she's old and rusty. i used a fine grit sand paper on the shaft and sprayed some rust penetrant on before i put it back on. should i grease it? this is on an 89 wildcat 650.

Clutches are designed to run clean and dry. No lubricant. Take a good look at the weights in the primary, you may have one that is damaged or sticking. You could have a bad roller in the primary as well.

If it's been a while, you may want to put a new spring in the secondary, and replace the buttons. Check the helix ramp for wear as well.

The problem is not the secondary.
The primary needs cleaning.

i think it's the secondary because i can actually see the secondary sticking. i couldn't get the first one off so i pounded it off, it was rusted on. i bought another used one this weekend and put it on, but i can still see it sticking on the shaft.

Had the same issue, it was the secondary.

It could be just loading up! It might be in the carbs! After it bogs down take a look at the plugs!

Clean it the same way as the primary.
If it still binds, take it apart and use some emory strips and clean the center shaft and the bushing so it slides easily.

Took it apart, cleaned it. Checked everything over, threw it back together and called it a day.
