clutch

I recentlty purcgased a 99 jag deluxe 440 for my wife. It has 350 miles on it and runs like the day it was purchased new. However the primary clutch (at an idle) is engaged just enough that the machine stalls due to bogging with the brake applied. is there a simple adjustment to the clutch to open it up a little.

First make sure you have the right belt for it, the sled 'shouldn't' do that from the factory. If it is the right belt then you will need to add some shims the the secondary clucth to get the belt lower. The belt should be 1/16-1/8 above the secondary and have 1.5" of deflection.

Just had a problem with my 2000 ZL550 where the clutch grabbed the belt and wouldn't let go.

Starting it on a stand, the track would immediately move. Pulling the brake would stall the engine. Took the belt off, gave it some gas, then hit the kill - while watching the clutch. The clutch would open, then pop to the "home" position with a nice click sound. I knew it was opening all the way - you could hear it snap. Still had the problem though, grabbed the belt because it wasn't opening all the way.

So how did I fix it? Well... upon careful inspection of the clutch, I found one of the weights was busted in half. The half still attached would throw out, then get stuck in the spider when the spring forced the drive clutch back open on idle. The stuck piece kept the clutch closed a little bit - enough to still grab the belt.

Take a careful look, and see if you don''t have the same thing occurring.

Sorry... I thought the fix was obvious.

I removed the end plate, and was able to get at the weights from there. Take them all off, and replace them. In my case, the dealer only had 2 weights in stock. I bought 2, but ended up only using 1, since the ones in it had been ground. I had to match them up.

I bolted the 3 weights together (2 old/1new). Then, I chucked a sanding drum in my drill press, and matched up the curves. That cleaned 'em up real nice and got rid of the wear marks. Then I weighed each one on a precision scale. I ground them from the back side, with my grinder, to get them all to the same weight.

Not too bad of a job. Only took an hour or so to get it all done and back together. I was out riding that very same evening. Clutch is real smooth now!
