VForce3 Reeds
Im looking to enhance performance on my 2004 AC F5. Does anybody know if the vforce3 reeds are worth the price? What will it do to enhance the performance? More horse? better fuel mpg?
thanks

Aftermarket reeds allow a bit better airflow over stock. More air = more HP possible. On a stock 500, you won't notice much gain in performance because the stock reeds are not limiting you a whole lot. If you increase airflow to where the reeds are a bottleneck, adding aftermarket helps a bunch. Larger engines with aftermarket pipes and aftermarket intakes show improvement, even more so if the cylinders are ported, because the increased airflow makes the reeds the weak point.
I don't think I would spend the money on a stock 500, there are better improvements you can make for the bucks, such as aftermarket can/pipe combos. If you have already done other mods, it's your call.

So where would be a good place to start on enhancing performance? Clutch kit a good idea?

First thing most people do is get an aftermarket pipe and can. They usually increase HP and decrease weight, so you get a lot of bang for your bucks. Then clutching would be next, usually adding a pipe also changes the powerband, and you have to clutch it to get the RPMs to where the power is. Is your sled carbed or EFI? You may have more limitations on what you can do with the EFI model.
Have you checked out ArcticChat.com? That is a Cat specific forum, there are a lot of guys that have a TON of info on tuning all sorts of cats. I'm betting they can give you some pretty specific info regarding what works best for your application.

Clutch kit is a definite yes!
Then if you wan crisper response, the v-force reeds seem to have the best reports.
Then, if you want to get the most from the engine and have lots of cash, you can start on the inside with port work and then pipes and fuel and timing control modules.

I'm kinda partial to Comet myself.
Just do a google for "snowmobile clutch kits".

I put an ODS kit on my 03 F5 & it seemed to have much better launch, upshift & backshift....highly recommended!! Also have V-Force reeds, but they were installed before I got it, so I can't provide an A-B comparison. The F5 is jetted a little (lot!) fat from the factory....you could go leaner by 1-2 sizes. The AC 500 APV produces 105 Hp....it is what it is!! If you want more Hp & keep reliability, go with an F6 or F7!

I haven't heard anything bout BM going out? I'm a dealer! I would recomend a Goodwin Performance kit myself! You didn't mention if you were EFI or not? You can go to a big bore like a 600 or maybe even a 7? You can send your jugs and head into U S Chrome in Wi along with the pistons of your choice and they will bore and replate and even port if you want, also the head will need to be opened up to the corect dia too!
Do your perf work first then do the clutching! More HP means changing the clutching!

My F5 is carb. Do you know if you have to mess with the carbs if you get a BMP pipe mod?
