chaincase q on my 97 580 efi

first off the chain is stretched and skipping, and the auto tensioner is maxed out. so i need to dig in there this summer. stock top gear is 19t stock chain is 70p. i bought a 17t top gear and a 68p chain. but now im hearing i shouldnt run a 17 i should do maybe an 18t top gear, if i pick up an 18t top gear can i still tightly use my 68p chain?

If you are only going to change the sprocket by one tooth +/-, you can use the same chain.

I wouldn't go any lower than an 18T top.

yes, i am wondering if i go to an 18 instead of the 17 i have, if i could run the brand new 68 p chain i have in the garage? stock is 19 t top, and 70 p chain.
