96 zrt rear...again
So i got the suspension out. Thanks RJ...
I'm going to have to replace the front arm to rail mounting plates cause both sides are completely cracked, looks like impact damage, not sure if you can even buy them separate from the rails. Arms are all rusted and I'm gonna pull the shocks and check them over but then i was thinking...
If too much is wrong, I may upgrade the suspension to the ETT. I've been reading about it on a few other forums. I've found a suspension from a 97 zl440 that looks in good shape. Sounds easy enough although i have no idea where to get the measurements required...
This wasn't in the original plans for this summer but since i have to deal with the suspension anyways...
Any thoughts, ideas, warnings...

Only thing i've been able to find out is that the zl doesn't have the torque sensing link. Doubt this would be a big deal since i'm coming off the stock zrt suspension, but does anyone know if it can be added to this setup?

LOL thanks. I dont want good luck selling. Hmmmm how about goodluck fixing. so did you find it easy to take apart and fix. rj said for me to fix my bearing its pretty simple. my brother thinks its a bad idea for me to try. especially if i think i fixed it and it breaks again on a canada trip or something. i kinda tried selling it. if someone wanted it bad they would have bought it. i would like a 1000, but mine is good. she has 6,000 miles. i should replace all the bearings anyways.

Haven't really had too much trouble, but i like tooling around. I guess the hardest part will be remembering how to put it all back together . Got all the different parts bagged and took lots-o-photos. My shop looks like a parts warehouse...carbs are out, exhaust is off, seat-n-tank, dash, hood, suspension, next i'll pull the water pump and check the seals there. Prob won't get into the engine, depends how quick everything else goes. I've never tried pulling the driveshaft, so i can't really say how much is involved.
RJ has some good ideas and seems quite knowledgeable from help i've gotten or other posts i've read.
Good Luck Fixing

Hey CJ I picked up my big truck from Ma last summer it wasn't Plymouth but it sounded like it?
By all means do the ETT upgrade! I did my 95 ZRT and Wow what a difference! I did the front too and I must have dropped 50 pounds! And what an improvement!
And all you would need to do is pick up an upgrade kit for bout $100!

Thanks KC, been reading at arctic chat and got the measures for a 98 zl. I assume the 97 is the same, any idea? Waiting for a post there to confirm, but no takers yet...
You mean an upgrade kit for the front suspension mod? Been reading about that too. Didn't think it was in the budget, but for 100 bucks... Are you just calling it an upgrade kit, as in buy all the parts separate to upgrade or is it actually available as a kit somewhere? Haven't bothered looking into the parts i'd need, but now i just might.
Damn...this'll be a completely new sled by the time i'm done!

I have already started what is known as the AGLT mod, bassicly instaling 2000+ zr a-arms in the zr1 chassis. To go along with that I got some Fox Floats . But, the arms I got are tweeked and don't fit right . That being said, I got to go borrom somebody's torches to get em back in check.
From what I hear its a hure improvement over stock setup. The only other suspension related mater for me is to find a new rear skid...
Good luck!

Thanks, the hood came out better than i could have hoped for...
Nope, didn't have a problem with overheating, but i only picked up this sled last february. I am losing antifreeze very slowly somewhere, trying to locate that right now actually. I had her out for a few longish runs with a lot of idling as well as low and high speed without a problem. I think i only totalled 150 km on her this past year.
I take it your 580's been running a little warm?
I'd post a new thread, the forums a little slow right now, but quite a few good people are still around to help.
You could check a few things, although this time of year it'll overheat fast.
1. Make sure you have enough fluid. Not sure about the 580, but i'm supposed to tilt the front of the sled up about a foot when i'm checking the level and filling to make sure i get enough back to the rear heat exchanger.
2. Make sure your fluids in good shape. Long shot, but if its really old or for some reason has water in it, could have been freezing on you and creating a blockage.
3. If you want to run it now, fire the sled up and keep touching the rear heat exchanger as the sled warms, if it starts to get warm, then your antifreeze is cycling. I wouldn't run it more than 10 or 15 mins though, especially if it was overheating in the winter.
4. If the heat exchanger doesn't get warm then pull your thermostat and test it. Heat up some water and drop it in, you should be able to see the diaphragm move open. If it doesn't then you'll need a new t-stat.
Just a few things to check but i would post a new thread and you'll prob get lots more help.
Good Luck

Just checked my manual. For most 90-98 liquid cooled models (thats what my manual is for), the t-stat should open at 42 deg C (107 deg F) and close when the liquid temp drops more than 10 degrees.

As AD said you could could have a blockage in the lines being a number of things. When filing a sled you should have the front end up in the air more then a foot to get rid of any air pockets back there. You should also run the sled in this position for a litle while being carfull anti-freeze doesn't get everywere.

Sorry, haven't had mine on ice yet to test it, and with all the snow we had late in the year, the trails around here were groomed nice not too hard. Threw lots of snow around.
I've read somewhere about putting in extra rads for some "wind" cooling. I guess anyone that runs in the summer with a liquid cooled would have to rig something?
