my 580 efi is a reliable sled, over 140 psi on both cylinders after 4000 miles. plenty of power, its not a rocket ship, but she moves and pulls the front skis. the sled will only be as reliable as the previous owners maintenance though, keep that in mind. the 1997 580s had much better suspension if you could find one.

I've always said the ZR580 EFI is the perfect trail sled! It does have plenty of power, my Pantera 580 will run 90! My Ext perhaps a bit more! The 97 would have the EET suspension a real plus! But if you can get the 95 cheap enough, I did up grade my 95 to my 98 suspension, front and rear!

One of my friends has one and it can keep up with my Wildcat until about 90 and then I walk away from him.

WE have a 97 zr580 EFI and it is a very nice sled. It will keep up with my wildcat 700 ( like RJ said) Ive had the ZR up to 100 (had to stop there ran out of room). It will move right along. Ive adjusted alot on the suspension, put a handle bar risor on it (so I can stand). And it goes pretty good in the powder also.

I had a 95 ZR 580 EFI, it was a quick sled and was very fun in the corners. Watch out for piston skirts failing, usually around the 2500 mile mark. Keep a good battery in the system as the EFI computer does not like poor batteries. It is a mid-90s Arctic cat, so watch out for PTO side driveline bearing failure (if the speedo quits, check the bearing!). They also suffer from very cheap throttle safety switches and bushings that can leave you stranded. If it has the 6-post comet/ac clutch, when the clutch goes south, replace it with a 9 post Cat clutch, they are much stronger and go a lot more miles between rebuilds/service. I have yet to see that year ZR without a crack in the hood about mid-hood, that must have been a weak casting point or something.

heres a mid 90's 580 with a stock 6 post, no work, stock pistons, no motor work. and no cracks in the cowl, about 4100 miles on it.
