Cool Newbie doing engine swap soon !

I have a 1976 Jag i thought it was a 78. . .

It has the 275cc engine I want to do like resto rod type project with this mechine. . .

I was thinking of running the 900cc triple than i changed my mind to 600cc triple. . .

What engine's would make good sleeper that would be easyer to find and make fit ?

I'd like to go atleast 440cc or bigger !

I'd do a ZR600(twin), they are readily avalible for under a grand and can make up to about 150hp! The next step would be a ZR900 (twin) but then you are looking at over a grand for the motor alone!
Triples in that sled wont fit! And you'd never get a set of pipes to work! The exhaust is the most important part of a sleeper! Any performance engine you put in there Must have a good exhaust or it won't run! If you could get a T Cat 1000 in there Capable of over 200HP and then butcher up a set of pipes you would be lucky to get 100hp out of it!

i would be worried if the stock parts can handle the stress of a 900cc motor. im just not sure how reliable it would be. just my .02 cents. but it could be fine, i wouldn't know.

thats true but how much power would one really need ? the old 275cc is pushing what 8-12hp ? 25top's ? How much power would one need to push a Jag 2000 ? 75-125hp ?

Tho i do see what you mean about the exhuast, When i was thinking of running the 900 triple i was thinking of running the pipes threw the hood . . . not very stealthy tho !

I like the sound of the 600 twin! that sounds plenty beefy i have a tendoncey to go over bord. . .

My plan was use as much of the higher output power plant as could engine clutches ECT.
this is going to be a toy!

i'm running it as this year than next year i'm going to get a more up to date driver say late 80's early 90's nice simple runner. . .

I was planning to build this over the summer or so. . .

76 Jag $200

Big power plant $1,500

passing a pack of late model sleds on the wide straight with 30 year old relic priceless. . .

that tis the goal anyhow . . .

Sounds like a fun idea

Remember to check if you can fit the gearbox, and a drive shaft that can handle the power.. before you weld the enginemounts in!

It's a lot of work customizing the frame and enginemounts, but once you are done you will have the biggest smile in your county!

There are still a few of the Vintage sleds out there that can do what you just said, stock!!! First one that comes to mind is a 76 Yami SRX! And there are alot more! If I was to build a sleeper I would start with something lighter, maybe an old John Deer? Or Exciter something in the 300# range?

I think i'm just going to put 440 dual carb engine in there should be almost a drop in bolt up and go !
or atleast thats what i'm getting told by the guy's around here off they all seem to say go with the 440dual carb fan cooled or air cooled engine. . .tho one older fella thinks the 440 liquid cooled would give the best power. . .

I'm almost thinking with all the differing opinions i should maybe just be happy to have a running 275 and enjoy all of its slow and doggyness cause hey after all it's faster than walking. . .

440

Even a 340 twin would surprise you with it's power increase from what you have in there now.
Putting a liquid cooled in there would be way more work (easier to just get another sled).
Let's not forget about a 500cc fan to go in there as well.

A 500cc fan cooled would drop right in ?
about what dose that turn for power ? i'm still woundering about what i got for power . . .

275ccHP:

340ccHP:

440ccHP:

500ccHP:

I'm guessing from what have been hearing it all of these are my option's the 440 fan cooled seems to be the popular choice. . .

I would like to know the power difference between these engine's. . .

do they offer a twin carb 500cc dual carb ?

Get a later model 500cc Fan from a cougar. Then bore it out and clean up the ports. By going with one of those motors you would leave yourself a ton of budget to modify....did someone say blue bottle......
We did this with a rupp nitro american body back in the mid 90's

Took a 440 John Deer Motor bored over and then put a blue bottle on it. That sled looked like complete crap but it was phenomenal. He used to watch the look on peoples faces in the fields back east when he would pull up on these new sleds and just kill em lol. The sled only lasted 6 shots but it was fun lol. We drove an entire season without using many shots but when those oppurtunities came up man was it funny.

Ultimately that sled melted down lol

Why dont you try looking for a newer 570cc fan cooled? Those are probly be best fan cooled engines in terms of hp numbers and reliability.

There you go, put the rubber track and all under the Jag and the 500 fan in there with the original sprocket ratio and it will haul A@@.
