93 jag 440

Hello!!

I've got a puzzler question, at least it is for me! I've got an old 440 jag deluxe with some speed issues. A few years ago the sled would be able to hit speeds of about 70 mph, now it goes about 50. It seems to burn a lot of oil as it is smokey, and the plugs turn sooty fairly quickly. Could this be the problem? It has an oil injector, how would I adjust it to be sure it is set correctly? Another problem might be the oil I'm using. Currently there is 2 cycle oil in the reservoir, not the synthentic injector oil.

There is one other minor detail that concerns me....the bolt that holds the clutch on sheared off a few years ago, but I have been riding it regardless (the clutch just doesn't want to come off). Yes, I confess, I am young and dumb, but would this have an affect on the speed?

Thanks for the help!

Ride one myself...

Hey I'm a young guy too and I ride a 91 jag 440... The 2 cycle oil shouldn't be a big deal. I adjust the air screw on the carb and it controls the mixture to an extent and that's all I've had to do. The clutch bolt could definately be the problem. Also a tip, I put hotter burning plugs in mine...Either the titanium NGK's instead of normal, or move up to the BR8's from the BR9's and now it runs better than ever. Carbs could also need cleaning, I did that and it makes a world of difference. Hope this helps at all.

Your oil consumtion should be a quart for every 12.5 gallons of gas! If you go threw a qt for every 10 gallons the there is an adjustment on the oil pump cable! You would want to remove carb and on the back, bottom of motor is the oil pump and the cable adjuster. First make sure the cable is in the adjuster and not pulled out! This alone would cause this! If not then loosen the adjuster giving the pump more slack! Double check the movement with the throtle, and see if the marks line up at full throtle! Again clean the carb!! Double check your adjustment (small amounts) by oil to fuel consumption!
