speedometer key problem

Im putting my sled back together after changing the drive bearings. i trying bolt on the speedo cover but the key is stopping it, not allowing the cover to be flush with the side. it is about 1/4 to 1/8 inch away. i have already removed the two old parts of the key. is it possible that the new key is too long. the two old parts look to be shorter than the new one. or could the shaft be too far too the left?

the shaft should shift into place as you tighten it, it is possible the key is too long, i just did mine too but i didnt replace the key as i am never looking down anyway. if you say theyre longer than they likely are. make sure the bearing is in the same spot it was when you took it off also.

The bearing should be flush with the end of the shaft.
You may have the wrong key.
