New belt still slipping? about 30 miles on it.

Bought a new Carlisle belt for my 1995 Powder special. I have put about 25-30 miles on it. The sled will engage at about 3700(which was the same with old belt) but it will rev to about 6800 give or take a few hundred rpm before it seems to really "hook up". the sled is moving but when I am doing about 20 mph the rpm's are still at 6400+ rpm's. Once you are moving I can take it right up to normal operating rpm's/speed. The issue I am having is I cant really "lean" into the throttle because I dont want the rpm's to jump over 9000 rpm...(or higher!). You can fell it "shift/hook up" at some point (I am guessing at about 30-40 mph and then you can clamp the throttle. What kind of break-in periods have you experienced (mileage)?

Is this fairly normal for a new belt? My old belt I can jam the throttle burn the track and gone. This new belt seems to slip a little in between there. It does squeal at idle sometimes. The old belt worked good, I just wanted to have a new belt because I had no idea how many miles were on the old one, since I just bought the sled in December.

Also on a side note, could anyone give any insight as to what color of spring would get my primary to engage at about 4500 rpm?

Thanks for the help,

Brad

First thing to do with a new belt is scrub the sides. When they make the belt, there is mold release on the belt that does not get taken off in the manufacture process. I'm guessing that the mold release stuff has transferred to the sheaves of your clutch. Try scrubbing the sheaves and the belt and see if that helps. Usually, a belt is broken in at about 50 miles.

The engagement for your sled is designed to prevent track spin in the powder. If you want a faster engagement, look at the ZR spring in your year, they are clutched for higher engagement for better launch.

Thanks Dan, I had read that before. I scrubbed the sheaves and the belt before the first try. And yes, my buddies 94 Zr engages closer to 5000. He runs a yellow on the primary. I would like a bit more from the launch. I dont run in powder all the time and most of the time the powder is not that deep. It is not something I am really needing to do, just something I may mess with down the road. Really enjoying the knowledge and willingness to share on this forum. Great members., be proud.

I will put some more miles on that belt tomorrow or Sunday......maybe tonight yet.

Later,

Brad

Take some sandpaper (180 grit or 220) and sand the sheves and the belt too! If the belt was wet or what ever there could be residue on the clutches? sand then down lightly and then blow them off!
