1995 Arctic Cat Prowler Seized up. How hard are they to rebuild?

My kids were riding our 1995 Arctic Cat prowler yesterday and they lost coolant about 2 miles from the trailer.

it was really foggy and we didn't see the steam for a few minutes till we stopped.

we turned around and rode back to the parking lot at a moderate speed as it felt like there was still some coolant in the system.

About a 1/2 mile out the rpm slowly dropped off and then it sputtered to a stop. now it's locked up and I can't get the pull rope to even budge. I think it's seized.

I sprayed a bunch of break free penetrating oil and straight synthetic oil into the cylinders but it's still locked up tight.

Do I just junk it or should I try rebuilding it? How hard would a prowler be to rebuild?

i own a prowler 1990 and they are cool sleds but if i was you i would defently part it out. cause if the crank is shot then you have a big problem.

You probably melted the pistons to the cylinders. If there is no crank damage, a couple of pistons and some cylinder work and you should be good to go. Figure out where the coolant went so it doesn't happpen again.

I have found the Arctic Cat factory repair manuals to be very helpful when it comes to rebuilding things. I went through two ZR580 engines (a 1994 and a 1995) and they are very easy to work on. They were both very straight-forward. I found factory Cat manuals for all 4 of the Cat sleds I have owned on ebay for cheap, keep looking, eventually they show up.

Good luck!

As BC Dan said if the crank is ok and it should be, the engine is very easy to work on! Pistons are like 50 ea and gaskets maybe 35, If the cyl are scored and they likly are, they can be rechromed for about 165-175 ea. It may sound like alot but 500 to rebuild a motor complete and you know what you have is beter than spending a grand on another used sled and possibly having to do the same?

I have never tore one down but it sounds like a great summer project to me!

I just hope I don't have to do it anytime soon.

Good Luck!
