1999 powder Special 600 EFI Questions
Hey Folks, new to your site, and snowmobiling.
I picked up a 1999 Arctic Cat Powder Special 600 EFI LE
It has 1400 miles on it. It has a D&D Pipe and can, chip, powermadd 8.5 risers, Boss seat, and clutching done.
My first question is, what are these sled like for reliability? I have a couple minor issues (speedo doesnt work, broken pin, easy fix)
I was checking the gear case oil and it is milky and extremly thick, like syrup at -40C. I am pretty sure it shouldnt be like that, so what all is invoved in draining the oil and what type and brand of oil is the best or reccomended for my machine.

General chaincase oil no need to be picky but you could go synthetic. Some people use 80w90 gear oil I believe is the #'s that also is suposed to work. You're cat dealer will also have this along with any other snomobile place. To change it you need to first drain the oil(there is a plug inside the tunnel where the chaincase is), secoundly you could skip to a fill up or go and take the cover off to make shure everything is good(highly recomended). Make shure you fill it up after the inspection lol.
You're speedo may not be a quick fix since usualy the drive shaft bearing in the speedo adapter goes and shears off the key. The speedo not working is a hint that the bearing is going to explode sometime soon and should be looked @ real quick. Its not extremely hard to do if things go right .

I pulled the speedo cable off the adapter and then removed the adapter and saw the "speedo drive shaft" (best what I can describe it) is sheared in half. Everything seems to move.
Thanks for your imput, Im new at sleds, but not quads or anything else with wheels

Check on the inside of the tunnel, below the drive shaft, there should be a drain plug there.

For assurance I would defenatly change the bearing. There is a reason why she sheared off? Also replace with OEM quality from cat directly of from a bearing shop, no made in china crap. How many miles on the sled BTW?

If that speedo pin is broken, check the bearing at once.
Read the link in my previous post.

Grease has nothing to do with the bearing since the bearing is sealed from the rest. The grease is just there for the speedo. While you're @ it replace chaincase one too .

You can get the correct replacement at any auto supply or farm store for about $12 each. (same bearings as the dealer carries)

Sorry for all the questions

Loosen track tension, take belt off along with secoundary clutch. I'm not 100% shure on this but you will probly have to take the skid out to realy take the presure off the shaft. If you're just doing the speedo go ahead and loosend the set screw on the bearing lock collor then coolen it off the bearing with a punch. Remouve the speedo covers 3 bolts and eavrything should pop apart. Slip the old bearing off install new one. Install the bearing retainer plates 3 bolts and tighten it up. Install lock collor on bearing and the rest of the stuff you took off.
If you're doing the chaincase also, do the speedo side like I said. Drain the chaincase from the plug inside the tunnel. Take off all the accesories arround the chaincase cover then take it off. Remouve the gears one in there(self explanitory) then the same 3 bolts holding down a bearing retainer plate. Slide the bearing off(will probly need force) and install new one. Make shure you put back the rubber o-ring behind the new bearing while you are installing it back in there. Reverse the steps to put it back together.
This is a pretty brief description of the method for doing this. Once you get in there its pretty slef explanitory. IF you have more questions shoot! Have fun and good luck.

Thank you folks, I tore into the sled this evening, took 4 hours which included servicing the skid and other random repairs. Did all the work in the back of my truck on my deck. I am leaving in a couple hours to go sledding so will post pic laters.
Thanks again

Here are some pics of the work on the sled the night before (finished at 12:30 at night and was on the road for 3 hr drive at 7am), and the trip to the mountains, wasnt alot of snow, but enough to ride.
