That sounds like a pretty thought undertaking. 2 stroke exhausts are very specialized from what I hear and are going mean you will have to tweak the carbs and stuff. I'm not too good on the subject but once you have somebody more knowledgeable chime in you will see. Not trying to detour you but just warning it could f*** you're sled up if it is not rejeted right. Why do you want to change the exhaust? I figure you're having a hard time finding after-market pipes for it.? Good luck!

I would believe its hard to find aftermaket, there almost nothing for my '96 EXT. You could try Ebay maybe , but shipping would probly be a killer. Another idea would be to patch the old one or remake it to its original specs. I dont doubt you're ability's, probly better than mine but it would be a interesting project, good luck!!

Yeah that would be bad, 580 are nice sleds, I love mine. My exaust is starting to rust so I satarted sandblasting it. I got the front y pipe donne and have stopped there. My air compressor is not big enought for the job and i'm affraid of making it go boom lol. Painted it with duplicolor alluminum, pretty nice. But with you're connections with the motocycle exausts you can probly get somme nice finishes. I dont think chrome would hold up because of the heat?

I think the expansion chamber is just straight forward, no baffles. On the other hand, I'm pretty shure the can has baffles for sound and back pressure. If you have a "stinger" or other modified exaust is almost strait.

Al's Snowmobile Parts Warehouse - Parts Products
Here is a link for the OEM exhaust $90.00 new.
Part # 0712-081, copy and past this into the search and it will show you the part. They are quite reliable and will make sure that you get the right part.

The pipe itself is hollow, in my service manual the procedure to clean out the carbon includes insterting an old frayed speedo cable.

Cool thats one thing i was unsure of that would make it easier to make one but getting it close to original specs for pressure etc would be the challenge huh

I'm assuming you are replacing the pipe from the engine to the silencer (muffler, can). If you have worked on 2-stroke bikes, you know that the shape and length of the pipe is tuned to the engine. If you follow the dimensions of the stock pipe, you should be able to make a pipe pretty close to the performance of the stock one, using stock jetting.
A "tuned" exhaust is necessary to keep peak performance and prevent engine damage. When the exhaust leaves the cylinder, the intake and the exhaust ports are both open at the same time. Because the exhaust leaves with pretty forceful velocity (good) some of the fresh gas/air mix also is taken out of the cylinder with the exhaust (bad). The expansion of a pressure wave created by the gas burning expands and then contracts in the pipe and then rebounds back from where the pipe is constricted back toward the cylinders. This rebounding is necessary to shove that unburned fuel/air mix that was heading out the exhaust back INTO the cylinder so that it can be compressed and burned for power (good).
Without the pressure wave and the shape of the pipe, the unburned fuel would escape. Without that fuel, you will be burning lean, even if jetted correctly, and you could burn hot enough to make holes in your pistons. You also lose the power that the escaping fresh gas/air would have contributed as well as having a TON of unburned hydrocarbons.
Not for the faint of heart! Good luck!
