Mechanics cost money. If he did the work and it took that many hours, I would pay the man and call it a learning experience. That's why we are on here, to help each other avoid having to take things to the mechanic. Shop rates here are about $100/hour, so it could have been a lot worse...
Glad a little got knocked off, makes it hard to justify working on those older sleds... what a waste that would be!

Careful callin' everyone else "dumb"!! Sounds like you weren't exactly sure what you were gettin' into!! Should have asked the dealer for a written estimate before you approved ant work. Lesson learned, eh!!
Anyway, your next purchase should be a service manual..........that way, you can do the work. I think the majority of this forum's members do their own work to save money. Geez, parts alone are expensive enough, let alone payin' someone to install them.
You'll learn, grasshopper!!

Words of a wise man. Always know in advance what you are getting into. The main trick is to keep your cool. A written estimate will allow you to decide what is absolutly nessicary and what you can do without until you can afford it. The main thing is to make sure your sled is mechanically sound as "chrome don't get you home". I second IRS on that you should get a service manual, it is the best tool. You can get one used off the bay or a new one. The first time you use it and save a couple of hours labor it's paid for itself.

I would personaly never take my sled to a mechanic enless it realy needed it and I was realy stumped on what to do. I'm 17 years old also, and have a '96 EXT 580 EFI lol. As mentioned above service manuals!! Great tools, the internet is also a good place to look up stuff like this forum. I learned somme stuff in shop class, basicly how to do it right lol. I could understad that you didint want to weld the mounts back up thoght, sounds coplicated even thought I can weld. Good luck!

I think you could have saved a huge a$$ headache if you did all the work yourself. The things you got done for the most part was cosmetic. Buy your accessories online at Denniskirk, MFG, etc. that do not have an overhead like an Arctic Cat dealer would.

yea but i couldnt do the welding to the motor mounts. besides that all he did was put on a bellypan and put on the surefoots, i couldnt do that because i had rails on there that needed to be drilled out. and i couldnt put the clutch back together.
