should I stick with the 580z ?

Hello,

I have a 93 ext 580z. The spindles have been cut to fit plstic skis. Now I have one rear shock thats new, and I am considering replacing the fronts and the other rear. Also I want to rebuild the whole skid(replace what needs raplacing) change brakes, and replace steering parts cause there is a lot of slop. I figure if I invest about 1000$ this can be done. But would this be worth it ? should I just invest in something newer like a zr600 ? I must say, this sled still rips, and I like it, but it needs maintenance.

I don't think it's worth the time ,or money. Those sleds brand new had slop in the steering.I'd take the $1000 and invest it in the ZR. You could find one for prolly around $2500 for a year 2000 or newer if you look around a bit.

It does come down to what you like? If you get something used you will still need to do somethings to it! Every sled needs maint. You know what all is wrong with your sled, fix it ride it this season and keep up with the maint on it, keep your eyes open for what you might find next spring and pick something up then, sell yours in good shape next fall/winter! Enjoy

Do the maintenance and ride it. You'll get more for it at sale if the problems are addressed first.

is it true, the steering, even fully rebuilt with new parts will always have slop? Also can I remove the belly pan to work on the steering, or do I have to actually remove the engine ?

I'm not sayin that new parts wouldn't help. But yes the steering on those earlier models are a little sloppy.I had a 96 cougar and a 96 ZRT 600 that were the same way.My steering on my Firecats are much tighter.Plus steer much easier. I think you do have to pull the motor also.

theres a 2000 or 1999 zl600 selling at a local dealership here. It has 7000Miles. Suposedly everything is good on the sled. How many miles on average do these motors run before they need a rebuild ?

I recomend freshening a two stroke every 3000-3500 miles (new rings atleast)
The steering can be tightened up but it will have some play always, you will be able to move the handle bar an inch both ways.
