Recoil starter

This cat doesn't want to restart after a long drive. I mean the pull cord just freewheels, doesn't engage. I have to reach down through a hole with screwdriver to engage mechanism.

Only does it when hot. Have had starter apart a few times, tried filing sides of lever (thinking expansion with heat and binding) unsuccessful. Tried reaming hole on lever(same reason) same results. Got me stumped.

The only thing I can think of is to try replacing the apply spring???

Does it more frequently now, even when cold. I'm not sure what to look for in there. All pieces look OK and are lubricated. That stupid engage spring is outrageously priced, only for that I would just try a new one.
