New Member, questions on our 73 AC.....

Hello folks,
First time poster here, I appreciate ya'lls time to help me out. My dad has a '73 AC that's been sitting for quite a few years. Had it checked out and something's up with a bearing, and seal is pushed out or something (wasn't there to hear the diagnosis).

It has what I think is a 292 motor, and my dad want's me to find out if there are motors that would replace the original, and if so, which ones and how might we find one.

Thanks in advance, it's much appreciated.

PTO seal is probably the one that you are referring to. It can be replaced by having the clutch pulled and prying th old seal out and tapping in a new one.
If you want a larger engine to install in there, you will also need the mounting plate as well as the heavier motor mounts and clutch to match the engine and respring the secondary to match. Also you will need the exhaust pipe from the larger engine as well.

Cheaper to just fix the existing setup.

Thanks RJ,

I wish I was there to hear what the shop that looked at it had to say, rather than playing the game of telephone and getting it 2nd-hand, oh well.

Is there a good resource for those old parts around, besides ebay? If we did find a new motor, it wouldn't necessarily have to be a larger one, the whole reason my dad wants it fixed is to take his 3 grandsons from texas, who don't get to play in snow much, for a ride. so it won't have to be a speed demon by any means.

Thanks again for the feedback.

B

If it has been sitting a long time, the best thing to do would be to remove the engine and pull it a part and rebuild it complete. A complete gasket set for that with seals would be$35 or so.
