The stock air box is tuned for your specific engine, both for sound & flow. Unless you just like to spend money, don't expect any performance gains.........it may run worse, since you'll change the air flow. Think twice!!

My firt perf mod was an81 tiger. Removing the air box wont really help a hole lot by it's self. Bigger twin pipes, 38 flowed carbs and alittle off the head would help. With some porting I did achieve 100 mph with mine out on Lake Tomahawk

plus you have to be cleaning and re-oiling them too just like a dirtbike filter, i was thinking about putting one on my sled because my air filter the mice decided to chew a hole through it, but decided to stay stock after finding this out... its a pain in the ass to do. especially in the winter when they will freeze instead of drying anywhere.

removing air box

I removed the airbox on my 92 Wildcat and put on KickAss brand filters. Why? I went to some grass drags as a spectator and almost all the racers had the airboxes off and filters on the carbs. Probably because they were racing on dirt! So I thought that if they all had them, I had to have them too.
So I bought some and put them on my Wildcat. Also made a lot of other mods at the same time- PSI pipes, custom cut 790 triple exhaust port overbore cylinders, Boyeson Reeds, high compression heads, heelclicker clutch kit, roller secondary conversion, and some carb mods. After all this, the sled has a very temperamental low and mid range, is kind of a pain at trail speeds, but goes like hell wide open at 8500rpms.

Hard to tell what exactly made the sled so boggy or sluggish
at low rpms- probably a combination of a lot of things, but
I always suspected the lack of airbox had something to do with it. Probably a good idea for wide open running or racing- but not probably the greatest idea for trail riding.

Very probable. Which brings us to what should probably be a new thread- Adjustable flyweight tuning. I put a straight
44 degree helix in the secondary as suggested by the manufacturer of the weights, and adjusted the flyweights so that under WOT the rpms stayed between 8200 and 8500 from take off to top end speed. So clutch is supposed to be tuned- as far as the manual says. But at less than WOT, the sled bogs at under 6500rpms and under about 50mph. Is there something I am missing on tuning the clutch? (I am using the white-stiff spring supplied by Heelclicker people in the primary)

Carbed. Changed needle jets from A4 to Z7 or Z6 and needle to custom PSI needle that gives more middle flow for their pipes.
Pilots are 45's, if I recall correctly, Mains 390's or thereabouts. Discovered a sticky enricher which made mag side run rich, haven't run since I corrected the enricher.

Perhaps thighten the driven spring one notch to raise the RPM through out the range and liten the wieghts to get the max rpm where it pulls the strongest, and double check the belt diflection. The rear needs to out of the rear as much as it can take.
