5000 RPMs too much for take off?

i recently bought a 99 ZR 600 EFI for $1500,
the thing runs great, and i just did some
routine maintenance. it has a clutch kit
and the clutch doesnt engage until it hits
between 4500 and 5000 rpms. i was wondering
if this is too much. i had to replace 60, thats
right, 60 track clips, and i was thinking that
the rpms might be the problem. if so, is there a
way to tone down the rps by adjusting the clutch??
and what kind of wear and tear does that put on
the drive belt? alot i would imaging. one more
thing, is there a standard on track tension?
please let me know and thanks. JL

5000 rpm is better for racing than trail riding. Change either the spring or weights or both to get back to between 4000/4500 rpm.
To set track tension, raise the track clear of the ground. Suspend a 15 lb weight at the midpoint of the track and adjust until there is 1 1/2" of space between the track and the slides.

i'd leave it kicking in high at least you are getting the best performance out of the sled. If you take out the clutch you will loose performance if that matters to you.

depends what he wants, if youw ant a good holeshot, you should leave it as is... if you want more top speed and get it there quicker, weakin it up a bit, because the stifer your clutch is, the longer it takes to shift, it's all about what you want, if i was you though, i'd leave it stiff.

thanks for the info guys, i think i will keep the clutch
and rps as is for at least this season. the sled is new
to me and im just chomping at the bit waiting to get out
and ride. i cant figure what the kid who owned the sled
was doing to lose 60 track clips though. oh well, only
some trail time will tell!

Some tracks are clipped every other or every third. Where there clips across from eack other? 4500 is about the best rpm to start. but alot depends on everything else.

yeah, there were clips across from eachother in some spots, and my buddy has 2 98 zr 600's with similar tracks,
and its supposed to be fully clipped. i just think the person was lazy and never replaced the ones that fell off,
and never tightened the ones that got loose. oh well, all
done now, and i just have to put on one 3 position spring adjuster and make sure that my track tension is correct, and im all set to hit the snow.
